The days after the rogue attack were filled with tension and exhaustion. The pack worked tirelessly to fortify their defenses, anticipating another raid. But the weight of everything was taking its toll on Kai, and it wasn't just the physical exhaustion. The conversation with Luca, the shared battle, and his own emotional turmoil were all building toward something Kai feared he couldn't handle.
He had always been able to keep his emotions buried deep, far enough that no one could touch them. But lately, those walls had been cracking, and it wasn't just Luca's persistence that was to blame—it was everything. His past, his family, the constant pressure to be stronger, colder. It was all becoming too much.
Luca, as always, remained close. Not smothering him, but near enough that Kai felt the weight of his presence, like a constant reminder that he wasn't truly alone anymore. And that frightened him more than he cared to admit.
That evening, as the pack gathered for a meeting to discuss their strategies, Kai sat at the edge of the group, his arms crossed tightly across his chest. His gaze was fixed on the ground, but his mind was elsewhere, replaying the conversation with Luca over and over in his head.
"You don't have to face this alone anymore. You have people who care about you now..."
The words echoed in his mind, but they didn't bring comfort. Instead, they brought confusion, doubt, and a simmering anger that he couldn't quite explain.
"Kai," Luca's voice broke through his thoughts, pulling him back to the present. The Alpha had taken a seat beside him, his usual calm and collected demeanor slightly strained. "You seem distracted."
Kai didn't look at him, his voice colder than intended. "I'm fine. Focus on the meeting."
Luca's jaw tightened, but he didn't push further. He knew Kai well enough by now to understand that pushing too hard would only make things worse. Still, the tension between them was growing, and Luca wasn't sure how much longer he could hold back.
The meeting continued, with the pack's leaders discussing tactics and patrol schedules. But Kai's mind remained distant, the weight of his unspoken emotions pressing down on him like a heavy fog.
As the meeting wrapped up, Kai stood abruptly and made his way toward the woods, needing space to breathe, to think. But before he could disappear into the trees, Luca was there, blocking his path.
"Kai, wait," Luca said, his tone firm but not unkind.
Kai's eyes narrowed, the anger he had been suppressing bubbling to the surface. "What do you want, Luca?"
Luca sighed, running a hand through his hair. "I want to know what's going on with you. You've been... off. More than usual."
Kai's fists clenched at his sides, his body tense with frustration. "I told you, I'm fine."
"No, you're not," Luca shot back, his patience finally wearing thin. "You've been distant, more closed off than usual. And it's not just because of the rogue attack. Something's eating at you, and you won't talk about it. Why can't you just let someone in for once?"
Kai's eyes flashed with anger. "You don't get it, Luca. You don't know what it's like to constantly feel like you're not enough. To have people expect things from you that you can't give. You think I'm just being stubborn, but it's not that simple."
Luca stepped closer, his voice softening. "Then help me understand, Kai. Let me in. I'm trying here, but you keep pushing me away."
Kai took a step back, his heart pounding in his chest. "I can't, Luca. I can't let you in. You don't know what it's like to trust someone only to have them turn their back on you the moment you show any weakness."
Luca's expression was pained, but he didn't back down. "I'm not them, Kai. I'm not your family, or anyone else who's hurt you. I'm here because I care about you, and I'm not going anywhere, no matter how hard you try to push me away."
Kai's chest tightened, his emotions threatening to spill over. "Why? Why do you care so much? What do you want from me, Luca? Because I can't give you what you're looking for. I'm broken, and no matter how much you try to fix me, it won't work."
Luca's heart ached at the vulnerability in Kai's voice, at the pain he could hear in every word. He stepped forward again, closing the distance between them. "I'm not trying to fix you, Kai. I just want to be here for you. To help you carry the weight, if you'll let me."
Kai shook his head, his eyes burning with unshed tears. "I don't need your help."
"Yes, you do," Luca said quietly. "And that's okay."
For a long moment, they stood in silence, the tension between them palpable. Kai's mind was a whirlwind of conflicting emotions—anger, fear, confusion, and something else he couldn't quite name. But beneath it all, there was a small part of him that wanted to believe Luca, wanted to trust that someone could care about him without an ulterior motive.
But that part was buried deep, and Kai wasn't ready to let it surface.
"I can't do this, Luca," Kai said, his voice barely above a whisper. "I can't let you in."
Luca's eyes softened, but there was a sadness there too. "I know it's hard. But you don't have to decide now. Just... think about it, okay?"
Kai didn't respond. Instead, he turned and walked away, disappearing into the woods before Luca could say anything more.
Luca watched him go, his heart heavy with frustration and sadness. He had known from the beginning that breaking through Kai's walls would be difficult, but he hadn't expected it to hurt this much.
As he stood there, staring after Kai, Luca made a silent promise to himself. He wouldn't give up. No matter how many times Kai pushed him away, he would keep trying. Because underneath all the anger and pain, Luca could see the real Kai—the one who was scared to trust, but who needed it more than anything.
And Luca wasn't going to walk away from that.
