The aftermath of the rogue attack left the pack on edge. Warriors patrolled the borders with heightened vigilance, and the entire territory buzzed with quiet tension. As the days passed, preparations were made for a possible larger attack. Kai had been busier than ever, coordinating with the council, checking in on the injured, and ensuring the pack was ready for whatever came next.

But despite the constant activity, his thoughts kept returning to Luca.

Kai hadn't spoken to him much since the battle. Luca had been focused on his own tasks, helping the pack with various duties, but there was something unspoken between them, lingering in the space where their bond was growing. Kai wasn't sure what to do with it.

The afternoon sun cast long shadows over the training grounds as Kai oversaw a group of young wolves practicing their combat skills. His sharp gaze tracked their movements, noting mistakes, strengths, and weaknesses. He barked out corrections when necessary, but his mind wasn't fully present.

Luca had a way of doing that—of creeping into Kai's thoughts at the most inconvenient times. It annoyed Kai more than he cared to admit. How could someone so persistent, so infuriatingly kind, get under his skin like this?

As if summoned by his thoughts, Luca appeared at the edge of the training field, his silver eyes scanning the group of young wolves before settling on Kai. He approached casually, though there was an underlying tension in his posture.

Kai sighed inwardly. There was no avoiding this.

"What do you want?" Kai asked, his tone sharp as Luca came to stand beside him.

Luca gave a half-smile, unfazed by Kai's usual gruffness. "Just checking in. You've been working nonstop."

"I'm fine," Kai replied shortly, his eyes still on the training wolves. "There's work to be done."

Luca crossed his arms, watching Kai closely. "You need a break, Kai. Running yourself into the ground won't help the pack."

Kai shot him a glare. "I don't have time for breaks. Not when the rogues could strike at any moment."

Luca's expression softened, and he stepped closer, his voice low. "That's exactly why you need to take a step back. You can't protect the pack if you're exhausted."

Kai clenched his jaw, turning to face Luca fully. "I don't need you to tell me how to do my job, Luca."

Luca didn't back down, his silver eyes locking onto Kai's with a steady determination. "Maybe not. But someone needs to remind you that you're not alone in this. You don't have to carry everything on your own."

The words hit Kai harder than he expected. He had always carried the weight of responsibility for the pack—always put their needs above his own. It was how he survived, how he kept everyone safe. But Luca's words, though simple, held a truth that gnawed at the walls Kai had built around himself.

For a moment, they stood in silence, the tension between them thick in the air. Kai's dark eyes searched Luca's face, trying to find a reason to push him away, to keep him at arm's length. But Luca didn't flinch, didn't waver. He just stood there, steady and strong, offering something Kai had never let himself accept.

"You don't understand," Kai muttered, his voice quieter now, the edge gone. "I can't afford to... rely on anyone."

Luca's gaze softened, and he took another step closer, close enough that Kai could feel the warmth of his body. "I think you're wrong, Kai. I think you've been alone for so long that you've forgotten what it's like to let someone in."

Kai looked away, his heart pounding in his chest. He hated how Luca could see through him so easily, how he always knew the right thing to say. It made him feel vulnerable, exposed in a way he wasn't used to.

"I don't—" Kai began, but the words stuck in his throat. He didn't know how to explain the fear that came with letting someone in, the fear of losing control, of getting hurt again.

But Luca seemed to understand without Kai needing to say it.

"I'm not asking you to change overnight," Luca said softly. "I'm just asking you to let me help. You don't have to face everything on your own."

Kai's chest tightened at the offer, the sincerity in Luca's voice stirring something deep inside him. He had spent so long building walls, convincing himself that he didn't need anyone. But now, standing here with Luca, he realized how tired he was of carrying everything alone.

Without thinking, Kai reached out, his hand brushing against Luca's arm, a hesitant touch that surprised them both. It was the closest Kai had come to showing any kind of affection, and it felt strange, foreign.

But Luca didn't pull away. Instead, he placed his hand over Kai's, his touch warm and grounding.

"I'm not going anywhere," Luca murmured, his voice barely above a whisper. "You don't have to push me away."

For the first time in a long while, Kai didn't argue. He didn't push Luca back. Instead, he allowed the moment to linger, the silence between them filled with something unspoken but undeniable.

Kai wasn't ready to admit what was happening between them, wasn't ready to give it a name. But in that moment, he allowed himself to believe that maybe, just maybe, he didn't have to be alone anymore.
