Ava Thompson stood at the edge of the party, her eyes scanning the crowded room with a mix of disdain and unease. She hated these gatherings, where the town's elite pretended to be friends while secretly clawing at each other's backs.

"Come on, Ava! Let's dance!" her best friend, Lily, shouted over the music, tugging on her arm.

Ava hesitated, her gaze drifting to the other side of the room. That's when she saw him - Ryder Ryder, the infamous bad boy and heir to the Ryder fortune. Their families had been at odds for years, and the tension between them was palpable.

"Just five minutes, Lil," Ava begged, trying to hide her anxiety.

But it was too late. Ryder's eyes had already locked onto hers, a smirk spreading across his face. Ava's heart raced as he strode towards her, his confident stride eating up the distance.

"Well, well, well. Look what we have here," Ryder said, his voice dripping with sarcasm. "The princess of the Thompson family, slumming it with the commoners."

Ava's eyes narrowed, her hands on her hips. "Ryder. Always a pleasure."

"Oh, I'm shaking with excitement," Ryder replied, his eyes glinting with amusement.

Lily stepped forward, her voice sweet but laced with warning. "Hey, Ryder. Leave Ava alone."

Ryder raised an eyebrow. "Or what? You'll cry to your daddy?"

Ava's face burned with anger, but before she could respond, Ryder's gaze drifted to her lips, and for a moment, they just stared at each other.

"You know, Ava," Ryder said, his voice low and husky, "you look stunning tonight. I almost forgot how much I dislike you."

Ava's heart skipped a beat. No one had ever looked at her like that before. No one had ever made her feel so...alive.

"Thanks, Ryder," she said, trying to sound casual. "I think."

Ryder chuckled, the sound sending shivers down her spine. "I'll take that as a compliment."

And with that, he turned and disappeared into the crowd, leaving Ava breathless and bewildered.

Ava's eyes followed Ryder's retreating back, her mind reeling with confusion. Why did he have to be so infuriatingly handsome? And why did she feel like she'd just been punched in the gut?

"Ava, are you okay?" Lily asked, concern etched on her face.

Ava shook her head, trying to clear the fog. "Yeah, I'm fine. Just...Ryder."

Lily nodded knowingly. "I get it. He's like a bad habit - annoying but impossible to ignore."

Ava laughed, feeling a bit better. "Exactly."

But as they turned to leave, Ava's eyes met Ryder's across the room. He was watching her, a small smile playing on his lips. Ava's heart skipped a beat, and she quickly looked away.

"Why do I feel like I'm in trouble?" she whispered to Lily.

Lily grinned mischievously. "Because you are, Ava. You're in big trouble."

Just then, the music changed, and the crowd began to cheer. Ava's eyes widened as Ryder appeared at her side, his hand extended.

"Dance with me, Thompson," he said, his eyes glinting with challenge.

Ava hesitated, her heart racing. But something about Ryder's smile made her take his hand, and they stepped into the swirling crowd.

As they danced, Ava felt like she was drowning in Ryder's eyes. She couldn't look away, couldn't breathe. It was like the whole world had melted away, leaving only the two of them.
