Back in the hospital
The first feeling I had was a sharp pain shooting through my neck and shoulders.
"Mum..?" I began, my throat hoarse.
"Are you okay, sweetheart?" My mother's voice was panicked, as if she could sense the pain in my voice.
"Yes, I am fine. Is Tegan okay?"
"Yes, the truck hit the car from behind. Don't you remember?"
"No."
"You were lucky it saw the car when it did"
"And Jamie?"
"James is fine. As I said, you were luck-"
"Mum, is the truck driver okay?"
"Yes dear, but you got hur-"
"Mum what exactly happened?"
"I thought you knew, you didn't ask me yesterd-"
"How do you expect me to remember that after I was in shock?"
"I don't know. Anyway, you were driving home from Middleton and James was driving through a green light, and some mad old truck driver went through red. James turned to the right in the middle of the junction and the truck driver kept going (over the speed limit), hitting into the back of the car and spraining your shoulder.
"Did they say I can go home now?"
"Yes."
"Mum?"
"Yes?"
"Why did I almost die?"
"You twisted that bone in the back of your neck - the one that kills you when it gets broken. Your twisted bone in your shoulder shifted it when you had a fit in the hospital"
"Really?"
"Yes. I was there when it happened. The whole monitor stopped bleeping. It was awful. I thought you were gone..."
Her voice began to crack and tears rolled down her cheeks
"I laid there for what seemed like hours, but it could have only been a couple of minutes." She cried.
"You survived" She added, smiling weakly.
"I did, mum. I survived. It was a miracle. I survived."
My hand slipped into hers, squeezing it in reassurance.
"Everything will soon be back to normal, mum"
"I know, Liz. I know"
