It was the day after Christmas in hoppers cabin and El was the most excited person ever, usually for Christmas hopper would get her one or two presents however he would always have to go to Joyce and ask her for help on what to buy El. This time hopper had a perfect idea on what he would get El, ever since she started living with him, she would always ask if she could go to school with mike and all her friends, the answer was always "No it's not safe yet" but finally El got her wish. On Christmas morning after she ate an Eggo extravaganza she went to the Christmas tree with hopper where they had a couple of presents, one from each other and there would be the occasional one from mike or Joyce as well.
This particular Christmas El didn't really get a present from her dad, more an envelope, she opened it to find a Christmas card from hopper but when she opened it a folded piece of paper fell out, she opened it, and it read
"Dear parent,
We are thrilled to say that Jane Hopper will be starting Hawkins high school on January 5th, 1986
If any more information is needed contact us when necessary
we are excited to see a new face in school next term"

As soon as El read the small letter she ran to hopper and hugged him tight
"IM GOING TO SCHOOL" "IM GOING TO SCHOOL"
"THANK YOU SOOOOO MUCH"
After that morning, she had been having the best couple days ever, she even went shopping with Joyce to get school supplies, but she still had one more thing to do, tell mike. Instead of simply calling him or going to his house and telling him, she decided to surprise him at school, even though the next two weeks or so went by so slow she still couldn't get all that excitement out her body, until the day came.
JANUARY 5TH 1986
El had packed her school bag and was ready to surprise mike, she was wearing a white knitted sweater, a pink skirt and some long white socks. Her hair was nice and long, it was styled in a half up-half down. Now she could go and surprise Mike, Hopper was insisting on driving her there but instead she begged to walk there so mike wouldn't notice her dad's truck, but she did say that he could pick her up if he wanted to.
El had had some Eggos and brushed her teeth and then she was finally ready to leave the cabin, El had walked to the school before in 1984 so she knew how to get there. She started walking and was really excited, she was practically bouncing along to pavement to get there. When she got there, she saw all the other kids, they looked like they all had their own group, tall blonde pretty girls, boys wearing sports clothing, kids reading books sitting together, there were so many people. Eventually she finally laid her eyes on the bikes, all leaning against a metal pole lined together, just next to them she saw a familiar group of people.
Just before she went up to them Will turned around and saw El, she panicked but put her finger up to her lips signalling to Will to not say anything. She finally made her way over to mike signally to the other party members to keep quiet when they spotted her hiding behind mike. She finally did it, she slammed her hands on mikes shoulders, and he jolted up, looking behind him.
"El!"
El simply hugged mike and he hugged her back, he was so happy she was here, and they were practically glued hugging together. They pulled off each other and El said hi to the other party members. About five minutes later a bell rand indicating that class would start in five minutes, it made El jump, but she didn't really care she was just happy she was finally going to school like everyone else.
They started walking to class and figured out that El had the same class as max first, English, El was pretty good at maths so she knew that she wouldn't mind that class, but she definitely wasn't looking forward to English. When she got to class, she thought she could just sit down with max and start but as soon as she sat down the teacher called her up to the front and told her to introduce herself. she remembered the thing that hopper had told her a couple of days ago
"If anyone asks to introduce yourself, say that your name is jane and that you just moved here from Chicago."
"H- hi uh I'm jane and I just moved here from Chicago" El stuttered
"Ok jane, go sit next to max" the teacher replied, pointing towards max
El sat down next to max and the lesson started, she tried to listen to the teacher ramble, but she just didn't understand anything, she barley understood half the words the teacher used, and the work was even harder, and her and max got told off for talking too much so she couldn't even ask her for help.
By the time the bell rang they had a break, El ran down the hallway until she saw a toilet sign on the wall, she went inside the girls and sat in a cubicle, a couple of tears running down her face, all she could do was hope that the other lessons weren't as hard. She checked the time on the watch and the time she had to be in her next class at, she had two minutes to get there.
She roughly knew where to go, she ran down the halls again until she made it to class number 103, maths. El wasn't too bad at maths so she wasn't too nervous about it, but when she went inside and realised that none of her friends were in her class, she definitely wanted to go back home now. This time she managed to take a seat in the back and not get called up to introduce herself, she simply sat on her own and did the work not talking once.
The bell rang once again and El stood up, she was happy that now it was lunch and that she could see mike and all her friends. As she headed out the classroom, she saw mike come out the one opposite, smiling at her, she smiled back but just before she went up to him a girl came up to her.
"Hey freak, how come you never talk"
El stayed quiet, looking down at the floor
"You're meant to look at people when they talk to you freak"
El stayed quiet
"My god you're so dumb new girl no wonder you look like you have no friends"
El stayed quiet tears forming in her eyes but just before she walked over to mike the girl came up to her and slapped El harshly on her face. El was filled with rage, she felt like her eyes were burning, but suddenly the girl got sent flying across the hall.
