DEX

Dex was suffering, to say the least. His best friend was off somewhere, probably making out (or snogging, as Biana likes to say) with some stupid bully or sum shit. Sophie was constantly having on and off relationships with half the school's student population.

And he, unlike most students, had worked out his soulmate. Or thought he had. He was honestly hoping he hadn't.

Dex sighed as he pulled up the student application forms to the university he wanted to go to. It was located in... Cambridge. Yes. That's the place. Maybe. He wasn't actually sure to be honest. He was thinking of taking the graduate course of computational science and engineering. Yes. Very long name.

So all Dex needed to do was do good! Which would be easy. Yes, very easy. If someone wasn't poking him. He glared sideways at the raven and brunette girls sitting next to him.

"Dex."

"What is it now, Biana? I have work I need to do." The aquamarine eyed girl rolled her eyes.

"Oh please. You've been sitting at that desk, in the same position for almost three hours." Biana stared at him pleadingly.

"At least come with Linh and I to get some snacks?"

Dex sighed. He really wanted to submit his application early.

"Do I have to?"

"Yes."

"Fine."

Dex was scrolling through his phone while sipping on his Taiwanese milk tea, which in his opinion, was the best tea. He paused while scrolling to see a post. 'Just got accepted into the Arts and Humanities Major in Japan' The picture was of a painting of a misty forest along with an acceptance letter.

He liked the post and continued to scroll. It had been sent a while ago, so it must've been from someone at least a year older than him. Or maybe he did the early international intake.

"Dex." Linh was staring at him. "Have you applied for a university yet?"

"I was going to before you dragged me here." Biana rolled her eyes at his grumblings.

"You can't finish it in thirty minutes, you know?"

"I totally could!"

"No you can't." Linh was joining in refuting his claim now, great. "You can try, but you would have to do a bunch of stuff that you need to do that would take over thirty minutes."

"Really? Have you applied already?"

"Actually, I have."

"Really now."

"Do you really doubt me, Dizznee?" Linh narrowed her eyes at him, basically squinting through her long eyelashes. Yes. They were extremely long. Dex was trying to work out if they were fake or not, considering they were also black. But maybe that was because of her naturally black hair?

Anyways, that didn't really matter.

"...."

"That's what I thought." The raven haired girl turned back to Biana, sipping on her tea. Biana and Dex side-eyed each other. Linh could be very scary sometimes. And sometimes, she could also be very rude. But she only really got like that when you asked about her sibling.

Dex sighed, rubbing the white heron mark on his wrist. See, where he came from, everyone was born with marks, symbolising their soulmate, on their face, on their arms, basically anywhere (No, not there, I know what you are thinking). And Dex had the unfortunate white heron.

Dex thought they were cute, to be honest. But at the same time he really disliked them.

Because of the sole reason that the white heron was the symbol of the Vackers.

"DEX! Whatcha thinking about?" Biana whisper-shouted into his ear, causing him to flinch backwards. Her brunette hair swished around as she leant back. Dex narrowed his eyes at the blackish stripe of hair in her fringe.

"Biana? When did you dye your hair?"

"Hm? What?"

"There in your fringe?"

Biana picked up her phone, flipping the camera. She dropped the phone.

"What the fuck? I didn't dye my hair, so why is it-" She started moving her her hair around, trying to hide it a little.

"My response, honestly." Dex glanced at Linh, who was basically tuning them out by now, wholly focusing on picking at her now delivered food. "Linh?"

She turned towards them after picking up some noodles from her ramen. "Hm?"

"Did you see that before?"

"See what?"

"The black hair in Biana's hair."

"Her hair is brown, Dex."

"I know that! Just look at her fringe or something."

Linh glanced at Biana again, squinting.

"Hm. Oh yeah, your hair has some black in it."

She shrugged.

"It was your birthday last week, am I right?"

"Y-yeah."

"You're 17 now, then."

"Yes..?"

"It's probably your second soulmark then, you get them around 16 to 18 years of age."

"Hang on. There are two marks?"

"Yeah. On your skin and in your hair."

Dex glanced between the two of them. Well this was an interesting development he was not expecting. Great. Now in a few months, his hair was going to have a strip of colour from his soulmate. What excellent news. Hopefully they weren't a redhead (most vackers were brunettes, though), he was sure that red would ruin his style (not that brown was much better).

He glanced back at Biana, who was still attempting to hide the black strip of hair behind her normal brunette fringe.

Dex sighed. He rubbed the white mark on his wrist again, hoping that he wasn't going to suffer too much later.
