Sarah stood in front of Ethan, her face pale with desperation, her eyes red and swollen from the tears that refused to stop. She had always been a strong woman, poised and controlled, but now, that facade was crumbling before him. The papers he had given her lay scattered across the floor, forgotten in the heat of the moment. The room, once filled with the quiet comfort of familiarity, now felt suffocating, as if the walls themselves were closing in around them.
"Please, Ethan," Sarah whispered, her voice breaking as she took a step towards him, her hands trembling. "Don't do this to us. We've been together for so long, through everything. I love you. Just give me a chance to make things right. I'll do whatever it takes."
Ethan looked away, guilt gnawing at his insides, but he knew deep down that no matter how much she pleaded, there was no going back. He had crossed a line, and things could never be the same again. But hearing her like this, seeing her so broken—it tore at him.
"Sarah..." he began softly, but she cut him off, her voice growing more frantic.
"We can have the baby, Ethan. I'll accept it," she continued, her words tumbling out in a desperate rush. "You can bring her here, and I'll try to accommodate her and your baby. I can be the mother of that child. We can raise it together. Please, Ethan, let's work things out. We don't have to end like this."
Ethan's heart sank as her words hit him, the sheer magnitude of what she was offering making his chest tighten. He could see the raw pain etched into every line of her face, the desperate hope in her eyes that she could somehow fix this, that things could go back to the way they were. But he knew, as much as he wanted to take her hand and promise her everything would be alright, it would be a lie.
"Sarah," he said softly, taking a deep breath as he tried to find the right words. "I can't ask that of you. This... this isn't something you should have to carry. You deserve better than this—better than me."
She shook her head fiercely, tears streaming down her cheeks. "I don't care about what I deserve, Ethan! I care about us! I care about you! I don't want to lose you... please. I can change. I can make this work. I can be what you need."
Her words were like knives to his heart, each one cutting deeper, but he couldn't let her sacrifice herself for him. She was offering more than anyone should have, and it wasn't fair.
"I need to do right by her, Sarah," he said, his voice low and heavy with regret. "She's carrying my child, and I can't abandon her. I can't walk away from my responsibility to her and the baby."
Sarah's face crumpled, her hands clenching into fists as the reality of his words set in. "But what about us?" she cried, her voice rising in anguish. "You're just going to throw everything we had away? Just like that?"
Ethan took a step closer to her, his heart aching as he tried to explain, to make her understand. "It's not about throwing anything away. I care about you, Sarah. I always will. But this... what's happening now... it's not something we can just fix. I've made a mess of things, and I have to take responsibility for it."
"You don't have to do it alone!" Sarah exclaimed, her voice shaking. "We can do it together. I'm willing to accept the baby, to accept her, if that's what it takes. I can be the mother to that child, Ethan. Just... don't leave me."
Ethan shook his head, his throat tight. "I can't ask you to do that. You shouldn't have to live like this, pretending it's all okay when it's not. I can't be that man for you anymore."
Sarah's sobs filled the room, and Ethan felt the weight of her heartbreak pressing down on him. He reached out to touch her shoulder, but she stepped back, shaking her head as fresh tears streamed down her face.
