“Fascinating!” Shellington exclaimed, peering at some little fish through his magnifying glass.
“Wow!” Dashi snapped a picture.
“It’s so cool how many different kinds of fish there are”, Angel remarked.
“Yes. Amazing, isn’t it?” Shellington agreed.
“Cheepa!” Tunip smiled.
“Barnacles to Dashi and Shellington”, a familiar voice through the radio interrupted them.
“Go ahead, Captain”, the dog and sea otter responded in unison.
“There’s a big storm heading your way”, the Captain informed them. “You won’t have time to make it back to the Octopod. Your best option would be to head to deeper waters.”
“Aye-aye, Captain”, Dashi confirmed her understanding. “We’ll check back in when the storm passes.”
They signed off and Shellington turned to Angel. “Come on. We need to take shelter in the GUP.”
Angel gulped. “This won’t be a big storm, will it?”
“Don’t worry, Angel.” Shellington grabbed her hand and pulled her towards the GUP-A. She was getting much better at swimming, but still not great. It had become a habit to pull her along when they were in a hurry. “We’ll keep you safe.”
The eleven-year-old nodded fearfully. “Okay.” She tried not to show just how scared she was. The cone snail incident the week before was still fresh in her mind. She swore to herself that she would never let that happen again.
(She also swore that if she ever saw another cone snail, she would get it to sting her, as punishment for what happened.)
Luckily, Shellington was right. They took the GUP-A into deeper waters and the storm wasn’t so bad. Sure, she whimpered and yelped, but Dashi, Shellington and Tunip were right there to comfort her. The latter even placed himself right in her lap. That calmed her down a little, but all she really wanted was for the storm to be over.
“Is it over?” Angel questioned a few hours later.
“Yes. Look!” Dashi pointed to the map. “It’s going away.”
“Well done, Angel”, Shellington added. “You were very brave.”
The human wasn’t entirely sure she agreed. She’d been whimpering the whole time. However, before she could argue, something caught her eye out the window.
“Hey, what’s that?” she wondered.
Dashi looked around. “What’s what?”
“That.” She pointed. Then, before anybody could stop her, she activated her helmet and jumped out of the GUP.
“Angel!” Dashi cried. “Get back here!” It wasn’t like her to just jump out of the GUP without permission or on her own.
Dashi and Shellington activated their helmets and they and Tunip swam after her. Of course, since they were much stronger swimmers, it didn’t take long at all for them to catch up to her.
“Angel! What do you think you’re doing?!” Dashi scolded lightly. “It’s not safe for you to swim off on your own.”
“I’m sorry!” the girl apologised contritely. “I just had to see!”
“See what?” the dachshund wanted to know.
The three of them followed her gaze and found the answer for themselves. Before them, lay a burnt-out shipwreck. Shellington recognised it; Dashi didn’t, but she could make a guess.
