This was an idea I’ve had for a while, so I went ahead and wrote it.
Rock Bottom
Angel had seen Captain Barnacles jump straight out of bed when his alarm went off and immediately start exercising. Peso could manage leaping out of bed too. Most of the other Octonauts could too, although some of them only did if they heard the Octo-Alert.
How they did it was beyond Angel.
When the eleven-year-old human girl first woke up, it took her several minutes just to process the fact that she was alive. She would keep closing her eyes because they felt so heavy. She would daydream, now that her dreams were over. Sometimes, she would have to stop and figure out where she was and how she got there. Not on this particular morning, though. She had woken up in her own bed.
However, before she could process the fact that she was alive, the door burst open.
“Are you ready to go, Angel?!” an excited voice quizzed her.
Angel had to smile. Shellington was so ecstatic. It was something about him that reminded her of herself. He had a research mission that day and she was tagging along with him.
She sat up, giggling. “I need to get dressed first.”
“Okay! I’ll wait for you in the launch bay!” Shellington informed her, obviously eager to get going.
“What about breakfast?” Angel wondered as she lay her clothes- purple and white striped T-shirt and dark blue overalls, same as every day- on the bed.
“I’ve got kelp cakes in the GUP. Now, hurry! I can’t wait to see what kind of creatures live on this coral reef!”
Angel laughed to herself as he left the room and she got dressed. She was looking forward to this research mission too and Shellington could be quite funny when he was this excited.
She tried to be as quick as possible getting dressed and heading down to the launch bay. She hated to keep Shellington waiting, especially when he was like this. It was hard enough to get dressed in the narrow confines of her bedroom. Having a room the size of a closet could be rather inconvenient, but Angel knew she couldn’t complain, for three reasons:
One, after sharing for the first ten years of her life, she was thrilled to have her own room and, after the fire, she was glad to have a bedroom at all.
Two, she was the youngest; newest shipmate and not even a real Octonaut. If anybody got a crummy room, it should be her. (She wouldn’t go so far as to say her room was crummy, but you get the point.)
Three, it wasn’t like she stayed there; half the time, she woke up in someone else’s bed- or in some other weird place, like the HQ or the kitchen or on the stairs in the library… upside-down.
Unfortunately, there was another problem: She was in such a hurry, she put her overalls on inside out by mistake and had to take them off again, so she could fasten them up correctly.
Finally, she was in the launch bay and she barely had time to climb into the GUP-E before Shellington closed the windscreen!
“Open the Octo-hatch, Tweak!” he requested.
“Please be careful, Shellington”, the rabbit begged. She knew all too well that when the otter was this excited, it meant trouble for her, in the form of banged-up GUPs she needed to repair.
“Oh, don’t worry; we’ll be fine”, Shellington responded, only half listening. He just wanted to head out to the reef.
With a resigned sigh, Tweak pulled the lever, allowing the Octo-hatch to open. Shellington swung the GUP around in three big circles, forcing Angel to tilt way over- first one way, then the other.
