Peter Parker, still riding the high of his brief stint with the Avengers, returns to Queens, New York, with hopes of continuing his superhero journey. However, life quickly pulls him back to reality as he resumes his daily routine at Midtown High School. He's struggling with typical teenage issues—homework, bullies, and a deepening crush on his classmate, Liz Allan.
While Peter is trying to find his place in the world, a new threat emerges in the form of Herman Schultz, an engineer-turned-criminal who has been using his genius to develop cutting-edge weapons for the underworld. Schultz adopts the moniker "The Shocker" after creating gauntlets that emit powerful, concussive blasts, capable of causing massive destruction. Unlike the Vulture, who worked in the shadows, The Shocker is loud, brash, and making a name for himself in New York's criminal underworld.
Peter, eager to prove that he's ready for more than just street-level crime, starts investigating The Shocker. His efforts to track down Schultz are complicated by his responsibilities as a student, especially as he competes in a national academic decathlon with his school. Torn between his life as Peter Parker and his responsibilities as Spider-Man, Peter makes mistakes that nearly expose his secret identity and put his friends in danger.
Tony Stark, sensing Peter's frustration, reaches out to mentor him, but their conversations often turn into lectures, leaving Peter feeling even more isolated. Determined to handle things on his own, Peter upgrades his suit using Stark's technology, giving him an edge in his fight against The Shocker. However, he soon learns that power isn't everything when his new enhancements fail during a critical confrontation, nearly costing him his life.
As Peter juggles his dual identities, he discovers that The Shocker is working for a larger criminal organization run by a mysterious figure known only as "The Tinkerer." The Tinkerer has been supplying advanced weapons to various criminals, creating chaos throughout the city. The Shocker's mission is to steal a powerful, experimental Stark Industries energy core, which could amplify his gauntlets to catastrophic levels.
The story climaxes at the decathlon finals in Washington, D.C., where The Shocker makes his move to steal the energy core from a government facility. Peter, realizing that his friends are in danger, races to stop him. The battle escalates to the Washington Monument, where The Shocker uses the core to amplify his gauntlets, causing massive structural damage.
Peter, using his wits and raw determination, manages to defeat The Shocker, deactivating the energy core and saving his friends. However, in the aftermath, he realizes that he's still got much to learn about being a hero and that sometimes, it's okay to ask for help.
Back in New York, Peter begins to reconcile with the idea that he doesn't need to prove himself to anyone—he just needs to do what's right. Tony, impressed by Peter's growth, offers him a permanent spot on the Avengers, but Peter declines, choosing instead to focus on his life in Queens and protecting his neighborhood.
In the post-credits scene, The Tinkerer, revealed to be an old Stark Industries employee with a grudge, watches footage of Spider-Man's battle with The Shocker. He begins working on a new project—a suit of armor designed to counter Spider-Man's abilities, setting up a future confrontation.
