Royal Woods South wasn't the kind of place where people expected greatness, but Y/N was used to defying expectations. With two older brothers who could hold their own in any fight, Y/N had learned early how to be tough and competitive.

Boxing in the morning, football practice after school, and late-night workouts—it was the only way to stay ahead. Especially when Lynn Loud was always right behind, ready to knock Y/N down.

Y/N had never liked Lynn. Not since the first day of 7th grade, when she was forced to share the spotlight in gym class. Lynn was cocky, always ready with a challenge, always smirking like she knew she could outshine Y/N. It didn't help that they were both football stars, constantly compared, their stats stacking up in a never-ending competition.

On the field, it was war. Neither ever missed a pass, neither backed down from a tackle. It was a battle of pride as much as skill, each game adding fuel to the rivalry.

But today felt different. Lynn had the ball, darting through defenders with the kind of speed that had made her the team's top scorer. Y/N, watching from the sidelines during a drill, couldn't tear her eyes away. There was something almost magnetic about Lynn's focus, the intensity in her eyes, the way she moved with such fluid confidence. For the first time, Y/N caught herself admiring her, something that sparked a strange, unfamiliar feeling.Y/N shook her head. This was Lynn—Lynn Loud, the person she'd been at odds with for years. There was no room for anything else.

Still, the nagging thought lingered. Maybe, just maybe, there was more to this rivalry than either of them wanted to admit

.When practice ended, Lynn approached Y/N with her usual smirk. "You better step it up, Y/N. I'm not slowing down anytime soon

."Y/N felt a flash of heat rise up, but this time, it wasn't from anger. "Don't worry, Loud. I plan on taking you down next game."But as Lynn walked away, for the first time, Y/N wasn't entirely sure if she wanted to win—or if something deeper had started to change between them.

That evening, Y/N couldn't shake the strange feeling that had crept in during practice. Lynn had always been competition, nothing more.

But the way their rivalry had simmered over the years—it wasn't just about football anymore. Y/N's mind kept flashing back to how Lynn's eyes lit up when she taunted her, the fiery challenge she carried in her every word. Football was Y/N's escape, a way to prove she was more than just another kid from Royal Woods South.

she fought for her spot on the team, for recognition, for respect. Lynn had always been the roadblock, but lately, she seemed like something else—something more complicated. Later that night, as Y/N boxed in the garage, the familiar rhythm of her fists hitting the bag wasn't enough to drown out the thoughts swirling in their head. Rico was sitting on the edge of the bench, watching with his usual smirk.

"Yo, what's up with you tonight? You've been off all day." Rico threw a towel at Y/N, snapping her out of her daze.

Y/N grabbed the towel and wiped her face. "Just thinking.""Thinking?" Rico laughed, standing up to toss a couple of punches at the bag. "You never think before a game. You're usually ready to knock someone out by now. What, you worried about Lynn?"Y/N scowled.

"Lynn? No. She's not even on my radar."Rico smirked, his teasing sharp. "Sure she isn't. You two are basically one argument away from tearing each other apart—or, I don't know, something else.""Shut up," Y/N shot back, glaring at her brother.

But deep down, she couldn't shake the truth behind his words. There was something about Lynn that had gotten under her skin in a way no one else ever had.

The next day at school, Y/N was sitting in the locker room before practice, lacing up her cleats, when Lynn came in. As usual, her presence filled the room with that mix of energy and confidence that made it hard for Y/N to look away.

"You ready for today's scrimmage?" Lynn asked, her tone playful, but her eyes locked onto Y/N with an intensity that felt different from before.

"Always," Y/N replied, forcing her focus back to her shoes.Lynn grinned, leaning against the locker next to Y/N's. "You know, for someone who's supposed to be my rival, you've been kinda quiet lately. Losing your edge?"Y/N scoffed, standing up. "Don't get too comfortable. I'll be back to running circles around you soon enough."

Lynn's smile softened just slightly, her gaze lingering a bit longer than usual. "I'm counting on it."For the first time, the tension between them didn't feel hostile. It felt... different. Like the space between rivalry and something more had just gotten smaller. As they headed out to the field, Y/N couldn't help but wonder what would happen if that space ever disappeared completely.
