Jiang Nanhua had long anticipated Old Madame Jiang's intentions. Hearing her finally articulate them, his anxious heart was relieved, though a trace of difficulty appeared on his handsome face.
"Mother, I promise to overturn the case for my elder brother, but restoring his title is beyond my ability."
Jiang Ningbao sighed. This issue was caused by her, and its resolution required the Duke of Ding's intervention. It was clear that Old Madame Jiang had already planned everything.
Indeed, Old Madame Jiang turned her gaze to Jiang Ningbao, slowly lifted her teacup to sip some spring tea, and spoke in a calm tone, "The matter of restoring the title can be entrusted to Fourth girl. Fourth girl, what do you think?"
Jiang Ningbao gave Old Madame Jiang a deep look and did not refuse. She nodded slightly, "That's fine. I will speak to the Duke, but whether it succeeds or not is not for me to decide."
She had anticipated this day, though she hadn't expected it to come so soon.
It was for the best, so she wouldn't have to keep worrying.
Old Madam Jiang felt a debt of gratitude towards her father that was greater than anything else. The destruction of the Changning residence was because of her. If she hadn't learned of her father's background, she might not have cared, even believing that they deserved their fate.
Since learning of her father's background, she could no longer justify or be at ease with the destruction of the Changning residence. Although Zhang had wronged her many times and her uncle Jiang Dongming had also acted against her parents, this was not a valid reason to destroy the Changning residence.
Old Madame Jiang looked solemnly at Jiang Ningbao and then glanced at the two quiet children on the low couch, saying faintly, "As long as you agree, that will be enough."
The Duke of Ding was the current Emperor's cousin, holding a high position. If he agreed, restoring Dongming's title would not be difficult.
Jiang Ningbao nodded, "I will do my best."
Yang Shi had remained silent, silently sighing. After four years, many things had changed, and her children had become independent.
Old Madame Jiang finally smiled, looking at the three people present. Her gaze passed over Yang Shi, reflecting on her own son, grandson, and great-grandsons... Her sister's children were all successful, while her own were all failures.
To say she wasn't jealous would be false.
But she was old, unsure of how long she had left to live. As long as her son's title was restored, his descendants would at least have a title to their name, and she would feel she had done right by the ancestors of the Jiang family.
"Once Dongming's title is restored, I will take Nanhua's background to the grave. I won't speak of it, so you needn't worry."
Old Madame Jiang gave them a final assurance. She also had her own selfish motives; she wanted her second son to acknowledge her favor and for Fourth girl and Jin Ge'er to remember her kindness, thus protecting her eldest son's family.
This subtle hint was understood by everyone present.
Jiang Ningbao marveled. Old Madame Jiang was indeed Old Madame Jiang. Even though she knew her ulterior motives, she would still accept her favor, though she wouldn't help the main branch.
She would only lend a hand in times of trouble.
"Mother, you will always be my mother!"
Jiang Nanhua truly felt grateful and respectful toward Old Madame Jiang. To be honest, aside from her lack of concern for his wife and children, she had been quite good to him.
