Prologue | How to Fix Your Sleep Schedule (NOT)

Sleep. It's one of those things that you can't not do, but you just don't want to do it. I, for one, absolutely despise the person who invented sleep, whoever that is.

Look, it's not that I'm absolutely against sleeping or anything, admittedly I could use some extra sleep on school mornings, but - was it really necessary to require us to fall unconscious for eight to ten hours everyday? We all know the answer to that - no. And everytime I think about it, I just want to have a chat with whoever invented that law of the universe.

Especially because my sleep schedule is... not normal for a twelve year old, to say the least. Usually I would sleep at normal times, but something about funny cat videos just... keeps me up at night, y'know what I'm saying?

It's like how the conjugation of some verbs in French have exceptions. I'm the verb, and the cat videos are the exceptions. Okay, I probably phrased that a little weird. Basically, I can't sleep.

And, I do try my best, trust me. See, I have this weird little thing that I like to call - insomnia. It's basically been a part of my identity my entire life, and I don't know how I feel about it. On one hand, it's great to have an excuse for staying way past your bedtime, but on the other hand, having to force myself to sleep hours every night is not a pleasant experience.

Most nights, I end up finding myself just staring up at the ceiling until I decide that I should at least try to sleep.

The only occasion that could possibly ever make me sleep mildly properly would be in the middle of some stupid math lecture. One second, the teacher's talking about who knows what, then the next? The bell's ringing in my ears and everyone's leaving the classroom, eager to get a good seat for lunch.

Even after I do somehow get myself to fall unconscious for extended periods of time, believe it or not, I still can't sleep normally.

See, my brain does this cool thing called lucid dreaming. Apparently it's actually much more common than people think, but I'm part of the one percent of people that do it. Every. Single. Night.

And, it's kind of fun actually. Being able to realize that I'm in a dream every time and being able to manipulate what I dream is pretty useful, especially for fantasizing about being friends with fictional characters.

Or at least, it used to be fun... Until one night, when everything changed.
