Part Three

I have walked down in the working class part of the ship for 10 years now. 20 years ask captain. That seemed a long time. I gave thought to being 38 years old. I was still single. I didn't and I didn't date much.
I was getting older and needed to settle down. Besides, I was hearing it from my friends that I needed to find somebody to pass on my legacy to. I needed an heir. Somebody take over my job someday.
I knew that all too well. I wanted to change things first. I wanted to make it so my children weren't forced to do a job they didn't like. I wanted them to choose. Then it hit me. That was how I was going to rewrite the Straight's law.
But I still need you to do it in a way that didn't put the whole thing on me. And then I figured out how to rewrite the Captain's Law. I always knew I had to change that one first. I heard back to my living quarters and got to work changing The Captain's Law.

___________

This is my idea...

My idea was that I would change it from the fact that only the captain could change the laws. Now it was going to read every citizen got the vote on how Allah should be changed. But the captain got the last say on whether or not that law would go through.

__________

It was perfect. That way the public got to put their name on the new law. They got to name it. I didn't have to do anything. I just needed to change that one law.
I hope that by changing the captain's law, the Straight's Law would be changed. That was my hope anyway. I didn't want to bring any children into a society where they couldn't choose.
I did end up changing that lot. It was now a matter for public vote which one got changed. But I still have the final say.
I was looking forward to seeing what love got voted on to be changed next. I couldn't wait. Part of me was excited about it. Another part of me was just like, what have I done?!
For a while, I wasn't very popular with the bridge crew. I got looks of disdain, evil looks. Looks That could kill. I never got any death threats. But I sure thought I would. But everybody kept it professional when they were working with me.
But for those that didn't work with me. Those people are not as professional. Those people that their feelings be known. I only heard the rumors though. I never did anything about the rumors. I just treated them as such.
Are you passed on and nothing was ever done. Nobody wanted to change the laws. I was in a way sad and by this. There was no change, nada. Why would people want to keep things the same? It wasn't right!
It had to be somebody that wanted to take a stand and do something, to make that change. Maybe they just didn't know that this change was made. So I had an idea.

_____________

This was my idea..

My idea was to find somebody with a good speaking voice and have them announced over the loudspeakers of the ship that the law was changed.

_______________

My idea worked. I found a woman with a pleasant and clear speaking voice to announce this change. This woman's job was only to announce all changes that may occur with the laws. The first announcement was about to air to the whole ship.
The bridge crew already knew about this change so it was nothing new to them. But the working class crew they were just learning about it. They were going to hear the change to the captain's law.
I sent a reporter of sorts to go down to the working class quarters to find out what they had thought of the new changes. I have even ordered the reporter to go to the shopping list to do the same.
It was about 60/35. 65% were for the change. The other 35% were not. I decided that I could live with this percentage. Change was on its way, and that made me smile.
But one thing began to bother me. The fact that I still wasn't married. I will give some thought to this later. I didn't need to worry about that now. I had other things on my plate right now. Like to change and the law that came across my desk. It wasn't for Straight's Law, it was for another one. It was for the Barter Law.
I had the last say now. But I didn't want the first law put through to being changed to be a no. I wanted to be yes. But no matter how much I tried to justify. This law actually made sense so I did end up saying no to the change after all the butter loss stayed in effect. It was made for a reason.
I did make one change to it though. I put a stipulation on it. That's stipulation was, this law can only be changed by the captain of the ship. Nobody else may make this change.
The law had not been changed. This was put over the loudspeakers of the ship. But it was also told about the stipulation to it. The store keepers were not happy about this. But there was nothing that they could do.
The storekeepers tried to put in a petition to have the law changed. But it never was. The law stayed the same. The bartering system stayed in place. You see.. nobody likes to hagel or barter anymore but that was the way our society worked. And it worked well.

_______________

5 months later there was another change in law form on my desk. This one was for the Prenda Law. This was a law that said basically, that all workers must wear the same uniform to work at their assigned jobs.
I did okay to change to this. I just changed it up a little bit. Instead, all workers could wear whatever they wanted. They changed it to this. {The working class must work clothes deemed appropriate by the employer. If self-employed then you must adhere to the captain. Bridge crew must wear uniforms.}
When this was announced. They changed and it go well with the working class of the ship. There were some grumbles. But that was only from the self-employed, at first. But things seem to settle down.
I was still waiting to see the change for Straight's Law. I never did. I saw many forms come across my desk to change a law. But Straight's Law was never one of them.
I wondered what was wrong with people. Were they so blind to see that Straight Law was so, barbaric?
Didn't they want it changed? I would have signed off on that change so fast. It needed to be changed. I will never have children unless that law gets changed. I was adamant about that.
