The sun had barely dipped below the horizon, casting a warm glow over the edges of the city skyline, when Hoshi bounded over to Vernon, eyes bright with mischief.

"Hey, you busy tonight?"

He asked, not even bothering to wait for an answer.

Vernon raised an eyebrow, well aware of what a question like that usually meant when it came from Hoshi.

The last time he'd heard those exact words, they'd wound up on a late-night train ride to a tiny beach town with nothing but their phones and the clothes on their backs.

"Should I be concerned?"

Vernon asked, crossing his arms. Hoshi grinned wider.

"Only if you're allergic to fun,"

He replied, pulling Vernon up from where he'd been sitting.

"Come on, I have an idea. And I think you're gonna like it."

Vernon sighed, letting himself be dragged along.

He'd learned a long time ago that it was easier to just go along with Hoshi's ideas.

Besides, it wasn't like Hoshi would listen if he said no.

They were headed toward the subway now, Hoshi practically bouncing on his feet as he kept the plan to himself.

Vernon was intrigued, as always, but he didn't push.

Hoshi would reveal it in his own time, just as he always did.

After a short train ride, they emerged in a part of town Vernon barely recognized.

It was quieter here, the streets lined with trees, and in the distance, the faint glow of a carnival caught his eye.

"Is this?"

He started, but Hoshi's grin widened.

"Yes!"

Hoshi said, practically vibrating with excitement.

"I found this little pop-up carnival a few weeks ago, and I thought it'd be perfect for tonight. Just you and me, think of it like a little adventure."

Vernon blinked, feeling a warmth bloom in his chest.

It wasn't unusual for them to hang out, but there was something special about tonight, something in the way Hoshi looked at him like he'd been waiting just for him.

He shoved the thought aside. It was just Hoshi being Hoshi, he told himself, just the way he always was.

The carnival was small but charming, filled with bright lights, rickety rides, and stalls lined with games.
