I faked it every time, but that's alright
I can hardly feel anything, I hardly feel anything at all
Motion Sickness, Phoebe Bridgers
"Hurry your tailbones up!"
Rowan hears his dad's calls coming from downstairs. He scrambles to get everything into his school bag. A uniform tie hangs loosely around his neck, and his shirt remains untucked. Sheets of homework sitting on a desk get smashed into the bag before Rowan exits his bedroom.
A tidy Juniper emerges from her room, ready to go. Her deep red hair contrasts Rowan's bed-head, and her clothes are nicely layered to keep her warm from the chilly weather. She gives her brother a look over before opening her mouth, "Where are your socks?"
"Ah! Right."
Rowan finds a pair of socks sitting on his floor. He hops to sturdy himself while putting them on; his tie falls off in progress. It quickly gets picked up and shoved into the disorganized book bag. Juniper has already left him to go to the truck. He rushes to catch up with her but gets his room a quick scan to see if he has forgotten anything.
He pauses briefly, his eyes latched onto the haunted journal on his nightstand. He received it last night only to be afraid of opening it. Without a second thought, he smashes the book into his bag with everything else. Rowan is already out the door, focusing on getting to school over anything else.
Rowan finds Juniper patiently waiting in the work truck his dad had lent him. She sits in the passenger seat, her eyes watching their dad roll the trashcans up the driveway. Rowan piles his items into the car before starting it.
He then rides past his dad, shouting a quick goodbye out the window before driving down the forestry road. The truck hums to push warm air into the space. He wishes he would wake up earlier to warm it up beforehand.
He glimpses at Juniper. Her eyes focused on the road before her. Underneath her hands, trying to warm her red cheeks, he sees her mouth twisted unpleasantly.
"What's wrong, June?" He asks, already knowing what could be bothering her.
She breathes, and a small cloud of frost appears in the air, "Do you think that haunted book is gone forever?" She then innocently looks over to the driver's side. Worry streaks her face, creating wrinkles in her young skin.
Rowan swallows and knits his eyebrows, "Yeah, uh, there's nothing to worry about now," He flashes a small smile in her direction. Juniper accepts the answer and goes silent as she watches the colorful trees fly past the truck.
