The mall was crowded, a kaleidoscope of flashing store signs and bustling shoppers. I followed Damien through the aisles, trying to suppress my irritation. It wasn’t exactly how I’d pictured spending my afternoon. Shopping for a dress, of all things, felt more like a personal affront than a necessary task.

“Seriously, Damien,” I said, “why are we doing this again?”

Damien glanced at me with a smirk. “Because it’s essential for our cover. And trust me, I’d rather not do this either, but you look better in a dress than I do.”

I rolled my eyes. “You’re hilarious. If you had any idea what this means to me...”

“Pain and suffering?” Damien suggested, nudging me playfully.

“Exactly,” I said, giving him a sidelong glance. “So, are you planning to pick out the dress yourself or just mock me while I do all the work?”

He held up his hands in mock surrender. “Alright, alright. I’ll help. But only because I want you to look stunning tonight.”

I grumbled as we entered the first store. The selection was overwhelming—rack after rack of sequined and satin garments that seemed to mock my lack of interest. Damien seemed oddly enthusiastic, rifling through the racks with the kind of focus usually reserved for high-stakes poker.

“Why do they always think that glitter solves everything?” I muttered, sifting through a pile of sequined monstrosities.

“Glitter does make life more interesting,” Damien quipped, holding up a particularly gaudy dress with a grin. “What do you think? Ready for a disco?”

I snatched the dress from his hands with a glare. “I’d rather wear a burlap sack than that.”

Damien laughed, shaking his head. “Alright, let’s find something that doesn’t blind people. How about this one?” He pulled out a sleek, midnight-blue dress from a nearby rack. The fabric shimmered subtly, catching the light in a way that made it look almost magical.

I raised an eyebrow. “It’s nice, but it looks way too fancy.”

Damien’s grin widened. “Exactly. Fancy is what we need. You’ll blend in perfectly with the crowd.”

I sighed. “And how much is this masterpiece?”

“Only a couple of grand,” Damien said casually, as if that was the most normal thing in the world. “But it’s worth it.”

I stared at him, incredulous. “Seriously? You’re dropping that kind of money just for a dress?”

Damien shrugged, a mischievous glint in his eye. “What can I say? Sometimes you have to splurge for the right effect. And besides, you’re worth it.”

I snorted. “And here I was thinking you were just a plain old FBI agent. How do you afford this?”

Damien’s smirk widened. “Let’s just say some of us have hobbies that require more excitement than our day jobs can provide. The thrill, Blake—it’s addictive.”

I shot him a skeptical look. “Thrill? So, what’s this thrill for you? Shopping for expensive dresses?”

“You’d be surprised,” Damien said, his eyes twinkling with a hint of mischief. “Sometimes the thrill is in the chase, the risk, and yes, even in picking out the perfect dress.”

I shook my head, unable to suppress a smile. “You’re impossible. Fine, I’ll wear the dress. But if I look like a walking billboard for ‘high-maintenance,’ you owe me.”

Damien chuckled as we headed to the fitting rooms. “Deal. Now, let’s see if you can make this thing work.”

As I slipped into the dress, Damien’s appreciative gaze made me feel oddly self-conscious. The dress fit perfectly, accentuating my best features, and for a moment, I could almost believe that this whole charade was just a fun game rather than a desperate gamble.

When I emerged from the fitting room, Damien’s eyes lit up with genuine approval. “Now that’s more like it. I think I'm going to have trouble keeping his eyes off you.”

“Let’s hope it’s for the right reasons,” I said, as blood rushed to my cheeks. “And not because I’m the center of some elaborate joke.”

Damien’s gaze softened as he approached me. “You’ll do just fine. And remember, this isn’t just about looking good. It’s about surviving.” our faces dangerously close

I met his eyes, feeling an unspoken understanding between us. Despite the tension and the stakes, there was something undeniably thrilling about our partnership—something that went beyond the mission.

“Alright,” I said, adjusting the dress and trying to ignore the flutter of nerves in my stomach. “Let’s see where this evening takes us.”

Damien’s smile was both reassuring and teasing. “Lead the way, partner.”

As we left the store, the city lights seemed a little less daunting. Maybe, just maybe, there was more to this assignment—and to our reluctant partnership—than either of us had anticipated.
