The moon hung low in the sky, its silvery light casting a gentle glow over the forest. The trees seemed to bask in its ethereal serenity, their leaves rustling softly in the night breeze. Lux stood on the balcony, lost in thought. The cool wind tousled her hair, sending it fluttering across her face. She sat with her knees drawn up to her chest, her arms wrapped tightly around herself, and her head resting on her knees.
“The dream was so real,” she murmured into the night, her voice barely more than a whisper. “Why do I keep seeing it? Why does it hurt so much, like someone’s tearing my heart from my chest? Why do I feel like something is about to happen? Is he real?” Frustration tinged her voice as she raked her fingers through her hair.
She remained there, unmoving, as the hours slipped by. The moon waned and the first light of dawn began to appear. Lux's eyes never wavered from the horizon, her gaze fixed on the forest as if searching for answers.
Athira stirred awake and noticed Lux's solitary vigil. Wrapped in a bedsheet, she shuffled over to the balcony, embracing Lux from the side. Without a word, she settled beside her, their shared silence comforting. The morning sun rose slowly, and soon Angelina joined them, her presence adding to the quiet solace.
The trio sat together in the gentle morning light, their unity a quiet balm for Lux’s troubled soul. After an hour of shared silence, Angelina finally spoke.
“Lux,” she began gently, “I think it’s time for you to take a break. There’s an upcoming match for your juniors, right? It might be good for you to go and watch them. A change of scenery could do you some good.”
Lux looked up, her eyes reflecting the soft morning light. The promise of a new experience, however mundane, seemed to offer a glimmer of respite from the shadows of her thoughts.
Lux hummed softly as she finished packing her things. With a few days of leave secured, she departed from the campus, joining a group of students from her previous fighting academy. As their coach during summer vacations, she was familiar with them, and her presence was met with cheerful enthusiasm.
The journey to the fighting competition venue was filled with animated chatter and camaraderie. By lunchtime, Lux found a quiet corner in the bustling venue and pulled out her phone, her favorite cheese burger in hand. She opened her group chat and scrolled through the hundreds of new messages, seeking some sense of normalcy amid her turbulent thoughts.
Deciding to catch up with her friends, Lux initiated a video call. The phone rang twice before Athira’s face appeared on the screen, flanked by the familiar surroundings of their college cafeteria.
"Baby, I miss you!" Angelina’s voice burst through the speaker with her characteristic exuberance.
“Hey, I just left this morning,” Lux replied with a playful smirk. “Don’t be so dramatic. I’m sure you lovebirds won’t get bored without me.”
“No, Lux, it's really dull here,” Ashiq chimed in. “We’re just counting the minutes until something exciting happens. How’s it going there?”
“Quite well, actually,” Lux said, her gaze drifting around the lively venue. “Everything is in good form, and the atmosphere is positive. What’s happening back at college?”
“Oh, right,” Ashiq said, glancing at someone off-screen. “There’s a campus selection starting tomorrow morning. Our Mr. Moody mentioned that the person doing the selection will be staying at the college for two weeks. Apparently, he and his team are looking for the most talented candidates.”
Lux smiled at the news. "Oh, really? That’s great! At least we won’t have to go job hunting ourselves."
“I wouldn’t be so sure,” Harry responded, his tone skeptical. “Mr. Joseph told us that the guy coming is a big shot—strict, domineering, cold, and handsome.”
“Yehh,” Athira and Angelina chorused, their triumphant smiles evident even through the phone screen.
Harry playfully pinched Athira’s ear, and Ashiq shot a mock glare at Angelina. “Okay, lovebirds. Don’t be too smug. I’ll call you guys later. Gotta go. Bye!”
With a quick goodbye, Lux ended the call and turned her attention back to her juniors, offering them encouragement and support.
The following day, Lux remained occupied with the competition. Around noon, she decided to call her friends again. This time, Angelina answered, her bright smile nearly palpable through the phone, while the boys looked distinctly annoyed.
“So, what’s up?” Lux asked, noticing the tension. “The boys look like they could kill someone.”
“It’s nothing major,” Athira replied, sounding slightly amused. “We might have praised the new guy a bit too much, and now they’re all grumpy about it.”
“Praise whom?” Lux asked, curiosity piqued.
“Mr. Sylvester and his assistant, Mr. Dane,” Angelina clarified.
The name Mr. Sylvester sounded vaguely familiar to Lux, but she couldn’t quite place it.
“What about Mrs. Dane? Why not mention her ” Ashiq asked, his face with a smug.
“Oh, come on, guys,” Lux interjected, trying to lighten the mood. “Let them have their fun. It’s all part of the experience!”
Lux listened intently as Harry’s voice crackled through the phone. “But Lux, I think they’re too much. Not just them—the whole college is in uproar. Even the teachers are all over them,” Harry complained, his tone carrying a hint of desperation. Lux knew how sensitive and soft Harry was, especially with his affection for Athira.
“Wait, wait, tell me who they all are ?. I don’t get a single thing,” Lux prompted, trying to piece together the fragments of their conversation.
Athira took over the call. “Lux, do you remember we talked about the campus interviews? Well, today the guy and his team arrived. You should have seen the entrance—a black Lamborghini rolled into the college, and the guy who stepped out was like a Greek god or a male model straight out of a TV commercial. He was wearing a fitted tuxedo and Ray-Ban glasses.”
“Let me add the rest,” Angelina chimed in eagerly. “He’s tall, muscular, and built like a model. His assistant isn’t quite on his level, but he’s also got that male model look.”
Lux cleared her throat. “Angie, I think you and Athira should stop now. I’ll come and see for myself. In the meantime, I think you should handle your boys’ issues now.”
“No, Lux, it’s not just that. There’s someone else you need to know about—Ms. Wisteria. She’s a stunning blonde with perfect curves. Her hair is so wavy and smooth, and her legs go on forever. All the boys are head over heels for her, right, Harry?” Ashiq said trying to make the girls jealous.
The girls' jealousy was palpable, even through the phone.
“Hey, I think I should cut the call,” Lux said, her voice firm. “You guys handle your couple’s quarrel; I’m not interested in this right now.”
Lux hung up the phone with a sense of camaraderie and curiosity about the new figures making waves at her old college. As she returned to her role with the juniors, she found herself wondering about the mysterious Mr. Sylvester .
