FIVE DAYS BACK
Mount Hood, Oregon, USA
“Enough. I’m going, and that’s final!” Sylvester Darren’s voice echoed with authority and an unmistakable edge of finality. His words were like a command, cutting through the tension that had built up around him.
Dane, his loyal assistant, stood with his head bowed. He understood the gravity of Sylvester’s tone and the implications behind it. This was not just a simple order; it was the end of any discussion.
“Yes, Alpha,” Dane replied, his voice subdued. “I will inform Wisteria and Uncle Darren and handle the necessary arrangements.” He knew the oppressive feeling in the room signaled that Sylvester was on the verge of transformation.
With a respectful nod, Dane left the room, his steps echoing in the quiet corridor. Sylvester, feeling the weight of his emotions, needed an escape. He leaped through a window, sprinting away with a sense of urgency. The physical exertion was a way to release his pent-up frustration and regain his composure.
He ran until he was breathless, finally reaching his sanctuary: the meadow. It was his personal haven, a place where he could find solace amidst nature’s tranquility.
Before him stood a tall waterfall, its cascade resembling strings of pearls that splashed over the smooth stones below. The surrounding flora—vivid flowers and small trees—thrived near the waterfall, with violet wisteria trees arching their thick branches to create a serene canopy.
The evening sun cast an orange halo through the trees, making the water shimmer with a golden glow. Sylvester pushed aside the branches and followed a hidden path through the grove, leading him to the rock wall behind the waterfall. The path was marked by steps that ascended to a cave concealed by the cascading water.
He climbed the steps and entered the cave, finding calm within its cool, shadowed embrace. As he settled into the cave’s serene darkness, Sylvester felt the tumult within him begin to ebb, his mind growing as tranquil as the ocean. He knew he needed to embrace the coming changes with a clear mind.
As Sylvester’s anger simmered beneath the surface, Dane arrived at the nursery where Wisteria was surrounded by the children of the pack. Wisteria sat in the center of fifteen eager faces, each child hanging on her every word.
“We want to hear the history of our pack,” the oldest child pleaded, his eyes bright with anticipation.
Wisteria smiled warmly and began. “Alright, I’ll tell you a story. Thousands of years ago, before phones, cars, or any technology we have today, our ancestors lived in the forest with the simplest of tools. One day, a miracle occurred—the Moon Goddess descended to Earth to visit. She encountered the people living in the forest and fell in love with a human named Vester.”
“Vester and the Moon Goddess fell deeply in love. However, because she was a goddess, she had to return to her realm. She invited Vester to join her, but he was human and couldn’t leave. So, she decided to spend a few more years with him, trying to persuade him to come with her. During their time together, they found a wolf cub at their doorstep. The Moon Goddess took the cub in, naming him Sylvester.”
A young voice interrupted, “Is that the same name as our Alpha?”
“Yes, just like our Alpha,” Wisteria continued. “The Moon Goddess and Vester raised Sylvester as their own. As Sylvester grew, she wished he could call her ‘Mom’ in return. So, she asked Vester if they could give Sylvester the ability to transform between wolf and human. Vester agreed, as he, too, wanted Sylvester to have that chance. The Moon Goddess granted the ability, and at the age of eighteen, Sylvester transformed into a tall, handsome human. He lived with them, looking after their needs.”
