The days stretched into weeks, and with every passing moment, Noah Grayson felt Emily's absence more acutely. It was as though a light had been extinguished in his life, leaving behind an emptiness he couldn't fill. He immersed himself in work, hoping to distract his mind, but nothing worked. Emily had drawn a line, and now they were like strangers.

Aiden noticed too. The boy had grown more attached to Emily, especially now that she was his teacher. But it was painful for Noah to see that, despite being in class with her every day, Aiden seemed to sense the distance between them. Emily remained professional in front of Aiden, kind and gentle as always, but the warmth she used to have when Noah was around had vanished.

Noah tried not to go to the school to pick Aiden up as often, leaving it to the driver. He couldn't bear the thought of seeing her—seeing the way she was with his nephew but distant with him. But one afternoon, his schedule freed up, and he found himself driving to the school.

When Noah arrived at the preschool, his heart clenched as he saw Emily helping Aiden with his backpack. She knelt to his level, speaking to him softly, her fingers brushing his cheek as she smiled at whatever sweet thing Aiden was saying.

But then she stood up, her eyes meeting Noah's across the courtyard. The warmth was gone, replaced by a polite coldness. She looked away quickly, gathering the rest of the children as if Noah didn't exist. The feeling of being a stranger in her life hit him hard. The one person he had grown to care for more than anything was now an unreachable figure.

Aiden ran toward him with his usual excitement. "Uncle Noah, Uncle Noah! Guess what! Emily gave me a star today!"

Noah smiled at his nephew, but the smile didn't reach his eyes. "That's great, buddy," he said, ruffling Aiden's hair, though his gaze flickered back to Emily.

She was talking to another parent, her back turned to him, making the distance between them feel even greater. The old Emily would have said goodbye to both him and Aiden, but now, it was as though they were just two people passing each other in life.

That night, the hollow ache of missing her settled deeper. After tucking Aiden into bed, Noah poured himself a glass of whiskey and sat by the window, staring out into the city skyline. His thoughts swirled, replaying every conversation, every moment they had shared, and now, every silence that stretched between them.

He couldn't keep doing this. He needed to hear her voice, to somehow bridge the growing chasm between them.

With his heart racing, Noah picked up his phone and called Emily. The ringing tone seemed to drag on forever, each second stretching his nerves tighter. He swallowed, hoping she would answer, hoping to at least hear her voice.

But when the call finally connected, it wasn't Emily's voice that answered.

"Hello?" A male voice echoed through the line.

Noah froze, his heart sinking. He hadn't expected that. His mind raced—was this someone Emily was seeing? Had she moved on already? His grip tightened on the phone as jealousy flared through him.

"Who is this?" Noah asked, his voice betraying the tension he felt.

"This is Parker," the man said casually. "She's in the shower. Can I take a message?"

Noah's chest tightened painfully.  Why there is another man in Emily's apartment, answering her phone.

"No," Noah muttered, his voice hard. "No message."

He hung up abruptly, his thoughts spiraling. His heart raced, his chest tight with a mix of jealousy and heartbreak. He downed the rest of his whiskey, but it did nothing to dull the pain.

Emily had moved on. That was the only explanation his mind could find. Maybe she was already seeing someone else, and he was the fool still holding on to a love that would never be.

Noah leaned back in his chair, staring blankly at his phone. The space between them had never felt so vast, and for the first time in years, Noah Grayson—the man who always had everything under control—felt completely lost.
