“ Wait, I’m going as well? No, I already made plans with Sophia for the summer!” Amery cried as she followed her mother down the stairs.
“Then you’ll have to tell Sophia you can’t make it. Now, come on, pack up.”
“This is so unfair! You can’t make me go.” She said, sitting down angrily on the couch.
“Honestly Amery, I don’t understand why you’re making all this fuss. Cole’s gone every summer for the past five years without a peep.”
“ Cole’s a fuckin’ stoner! He’s not even aware of his own existence half the time.”
Coleson, who had been eating an apple in the kitchen while observing the scene, suddenly stopped chewing, his eyes widening as he stared at his sister.
“What’s she talking about, ‘ a stoner ’ ” His mom said, wiping her head to stare at her oldest son. “ Are you taking drugs, Cole?”
He quickly swallowed the food in his mouth, his Adam's apple bobbing up and down as he thought of a convincing answer. “ Nah, I’d never, Mami. Don’t know where she got that from.”
“ Yeah, right. I don’t have time to even unpack this, but there will be a serious conversation after the summer ends. Amery, I won’t repeat this one more time. Pack your bags.”
Amery huffed, but went up to her room anyway.
“ What a constant state of chaos this house is always in. Alright, you’re driving everybody to the airport. Be ready to go in, say, an hour. ”
“ Wait, hold on. Airport? We’re not renting the house in Oxford?”
“ No, there were complications when renting, so we decided against it.”
“ We?” He said, grabbing his phone and sliding it into his pocket.
“ Yeah, me and the other mums from spin class.”
“ So it’s not just me and Keith this year? Who’s coming?” Cole asked, his palms sticking to the counter as he held himself steady.
“ I have no idea. I’m not even sure where you’re going, to be honest.”
Cole blinked slowly, his heart rate going higher by the second. “ Well, that’s just great, in’it?” He muttered, but his mom had moved on to shouting at Amery again.
An hour later, Amery was reluctantly sitting in the passenger seat of the red family van, her headphones already plugged into her phone.
Cole grabbed his keys as he walked out the door, hoisting his backpack onto his shoulder, the bag clinking with the sound of glass at every small movement.
As he started the car, his little sister huffed, putting her headphones into her ears. Cole glanced at her, then back at the road. He opened his mouth, then thought against it.
He really didn't feel like fighting in World War III today.
