Weeks after the incident, I finally got her a ring. When searching for one, I received multiple looks about my choices. Hanji said that she wanted a small diamond. Nothing big. The act of proposing was enough for her. However, the women helping me scoffed and spoke under their breath about how it was too cheap. If I were a real man, I would spend thousands of dollars for my true love instead of a measly couple hundred dollars for a small, unnatural diamond. Somehow, I left that jewelry store without scars and made a reservation.
"Hello?"
Hanji's warm and calm voice lightened my beating heart. "Hey, Hanji. At 7 p.m. sharp, you better be wearing fancy clothes."
"Like a dress...?"
"Or your black pants with your blue blouse. The one that shows off your shoulders. You know which one I'm talking about. You don't have to wear a dress if you don't want to. But it has to be nice and fancy. Okay?"
Her soft chuckles echoed in my ears as I pictured her before me. I could see her tilt and scratch somewhere on her head as she searched for words. "Levi," she says in a stern voice that froze my entire body, "is this another scheme for your proposal?"
"What if it is?"
"How romantic are you making it?"
"As much as I can make it, Hanji."
She chuckled again before replying in a deep, slow voice that captured my heart. It was a bit scary if I'm honest. "Okay then. I'll be sure to wear something nice. Are you picking me up or am I driving to your place so you can take me out?"
"I'll pick you up. Oh, and if you want to bring an extra change of clothes, you can. Only if you want to sleep over tonight."
"Why wouldn't I? Sounds fun."
* * *
"Hanji," I say to her holding the ring out in its velvet box, "will you do me the honors and formally marry me?"
Her rosy cheeks flourished under the dim restaurant's lights as the applause of the random strangers rose. At one point, every sound ceased to silence like my brain pushed a mute button on the environment. Hanji's lips began to move, and I couldn't hear her words. But I knew what she said, and my heart pounded as time moved slowly. I love her.
Sound resumed as I put the ring on her finger and embraced Hanji in my arms for a kiss. From this day forward, our relationship takes another step in the sand towards a future I can't see. But whatever happens, either good or bad, we'll be by each other's side. If this world is our kingdom, I know Hanji is my queen. Together, we'll be standing at the top of the world.
"I love you, Hanji Zoe," I say to her with a smile on my face, "stay with me forevermore. Promise me that."
"I promise."
