Meng Xian returned to her chambers, her mind still occupied with the weight of the decisions she had just made.

The flickering light of the wall sconces cast long shadows as she entered the room, a reflection of the dark and uncertain world outside.

And was greeted by the familiar, composed voice of her butler, Grover Carr.

"Your Highness."

Grover was waiting for her just inside the door, his posture perfect, every movement measured and precise. His white hair contrasted sharply with his black eyes and pale skin, and he wore his butler’s attire with the kind of dignity and discipline that only someone of his experience could muster.

When he saw Meng Xian enter, he immediately stepped forward, bowing slightly as he spoke with the utmost respect.

"The mushroom harvest has been successfully completed, and everything has already been arranged as per your instructions."

"Thank you for your hard work," Meng Xian replied, her tone warm but brief, betraying the weariness she felt from the endless responsibilities that rested on her shoulders.

As she walked further into the inner room, Grover stepped aside, allowing her to pass before falling into step behind her, obediently following his mistress. Grover was not just a butler; he was a Sequence 4: Classical Alchemist and the head of food production for the city. In a world where sunlight no longer existed, traditional farming was impossible, so Meng Xian had devised an ingenious solution.

She had taken inspiration from the work of Frank Lee
She had proposed a radical idea to Grover and his team: the invention of mushrooms that could thrive in the dark and harsh environments devoid of sunlight.

These mushrooms were a marvel of alchemical ingenuity, capable of growing and reproducing by devouring the flesh and blood of monsters. It was a gruesome but necessary adaptation.

Grover was a mythical creature by birth, his mind naturally inclined towards strange and unconventional experiments. In many ways, he was like a “Frank Lee 2.0,”

But with a particular focus on mushrooms. His fascination with oddities and his relentless pursuit of the bizarre had drawn him to Meng Xian’s side. Her calming presence, which had the effect of reducing madness, was perhaps the only thing that could temper his eccentric tendencies.

It was this unique combination of traits that made Grover both indispensable and somewhat unpredictable.

As they walked, Meng Xian’s thoughts shifted to other pressing matters. “What’s the news about the Demonic Wolf Flegrea?” she asked, her voice steady as they moved through the dimly lit corridors.

Grover’s reply was calm and measured. “Highness, Selene reported that the Demonic Wolf Flegrea is still searching for us, keeping a watchful eye.”

Meng Xian hummed in acknowledgment, her expression unreadable. The conflict between her and Flegrea was a complicated one. It had started when she had taken Mira to serve her, a move that Flegrea had not taken lightly. But that was just one part of the story. Meng Xian had also made a habit of disrupting Flegrea’s operations, eliminating his subordinates whenever they preyed upon humans. It was a dangerous game they were playing, but one that Meng Xian believed was necessary for the greater plan ahead.
