VICTORIA'S POV
I just couldn't seem to understand.
If August never wanted war, why did he stretch his hand out and cast his armies into the depths of the sea. He knew fully well no one—not his men or the soldiers of the temple of Nirvana would resurface the vast man-eating water body.
A deceitful act to eliminate a great threat at the cost of several lives. Stupidity or strategy?
The fact that not even a soldier carried a weapon of war would make it look like an accident, like he was retreating the battlefield. He was always known to turn tail and run anyway.
Perhaps, trickery is the deadliest demon of all.
"Vicky," a voice said in front of me.
I raised my head from the book I'd buried my entire soul in.
"What is it, Jenna?" I asked.
"You've been engrossed in that thing for the past 4 days," she sighed. "What book is it? The Secrecy of a Love Affair?"
"Such books are vile and are of no significant importance. Wasting one's time on such is the start of the race of stupidity."
"I'm aware I'm a bookworm, but to you it's a totally different level."
Jenna picked up the book in my hand.
"Conquest of Mortal Demons," she read aloud. "Sounds interesting."
"Everything in it is and beyond."
"So...big deal, they're demons among humans?"
"No, silly. Figurative ideas swarm books such as these, especially in this library. The demons referred to aren't literal but there qualities of humans, the traits and characters of eleven princes competing for the throne of Nirvana are."
"I'd do Audrey's kind of books instead. Sounds like you could read Longlegs if it were a book that is. Fatality—Love or War, is way better. Try it out-—"
Jenna abruptly stopped talking. I stared confused. She'd never leave a sentence cut short like that.
"Jenna, what is it?" I asked.
"It's him," she gaped.
"Who? Xavier?"
"Oh Xavier is history. He is way better..."
I looked towards the direction she was facing and found him.
"Rhys Rivera," I said.
I'd been hearing his name awfully too much and it hasn't even been a month since he arrived. Every single person was crazy about him—boys and girls. Mostly girls anyways.
What was so special about him?
"Hey, Vicky," Jenna whispered, "I heard he wrote that scholarship exam thingy you also wrote to get here. Get this..."
I looked at Jenna.
"...he got 98 out of 100, just a mark below you. Crazy right?! I couldn't get above 85! He's probably almost as smart as you."
"You stand corrected. I haven't seen any who would outwit me at intelligence. If I were second to any, it won't be him."
"You sound jelly a bit. And proud too—"
"Pride is a very valuable tool for development, Jenna. I am the embodiment of pride if it makes me grow. I need growth, so in essence I need a lot of it. Moreover, he could've cheated. An examination doesn't test how smart you are; it simply tests how much you know."
