Monday, 5th of September
I was sitting in front of my mirror, gently applying the mascara I had recently bought. My outfit was kept simple because my high school made us wear these ugly ass uniforms: a beige blazer over a white button-up shirt with a red tie, paired with a plaid skirt, matching stockings, and black shoes.
I sighed as I glanced at the clock hanging above my desk. It was almost time to head out and I still had to finish my homework. The thought of algebra equations loomed over me like a dark cloud. I shook off the stress, focused on my reflection, and gave myself a small pep talk. I reminded myself that today was just another day and I could handle whatever came in my way, even if it meant navigating through the mundane routine of high school.
I reached for my phone to check, noticing a message from my best friend Nari, asking if I was ready for the big biology presentation today. I quickly typed a reply, letting her know I was almost set. I knew Nari and Momo were counting on me to be the reliable one, especially since they had the bad habit of leaving things to the last minute. As if I wasn't the same...
With one last glance at my reflection, I took a deep breath and straightened my tie. I had practiced my part of the presentation so many times that I could probably recite it in my sleep, but nerves always had a way of creeping in. Still, I was determined to make today go smoothly.
There was a boy in my science class whom I had liked since junior high school, and I obviously wanted to impress him, which is why I was so prepared. He was popular thanks to his charming personality and attractive appearance. Every time he walked into the room, my heart seemed to skip a beat. I'd caught him glancing my way a couple of times and it made me wonder if maybe, just maybe, he'd notice me today. I wasn't delusional; I knew it was a long shot. But the thought of making a good impression and showing him that I was competent and confident - well, it was motivating enough.
I grabbed my college block, stuffing it into my backpack and took a last look around my room before I left. It was messy to say the least: clothes thrown all over the place, empty and half empty bottles and cups standing on my drawer aswell as a few plates. I'd maybe clean that up today.
I felt a bit of pride in the meticulous way I had prepared. It was all set, but now I had to face the reality of high school and the uncertainties that came with it.I jogged down the stairs, grabbed the bento my mom made me and walked out the door. Just as I was about to reach the bus station that was located a couple of minutes away from my house, the familiar sound of the bus pulling up reached my ears. I hurried my pace, not wanting to miss it. The ride was uneventful as always - students chatting, some half-asleep, others glued to their phones like I was. I had found a seat near the middle, trying to calm the nerves bubbling in my stomach.
When the bus finally stopped at the last station, I took a deep breath and stepped out, heading toward the entrance. My mind raced through the presentation once more, but the thought of seeing him made it hard to focus. I shook my head, reminding myself to stay on task.
As I approached my locker, I spotted Nari leaning against hers, her usual smirk in place.
"You ready for science?" she teased, holding up her own notes.
"As ready as I'll ever be, you?" I replied, forcing a smile, but deep down the butterflies in my stomach were telling a different story.
Nari chuckled. "Momo and I stayed up way too late working on our part. Honestly, I'm hoping I won't be passing out mid sentence." She shot me a wink. "But that's why we have you right? To make us look good." Of course I was.
I laughed, even though I know she was only half joking. Momo and Nari were great, honestly, but I felt used sometimes. The thought of dropping the ball today made my palms sweat.
We waited for Momo to arrive since she was always the latest. A few minutes later we found ourselves walking to our science class as the trio we were in since first year of high school. As we stepped through the hallway, Momo nudged me with her elbow, her eyes lighting up mischievously. "Look who's coming there," she said in a low voice, tilting her head slightly into the direction of the main entrance.
I glanced over, and of course, there he was. Tall, effortlessly handsome and currently laughing with his group of friends. My heart did that annoying flutter thing again and I immediately looked away, hoping my friends didn't notice the redness creeping up my cheeks.
Momo and Nari exchanged knowing glances, I could already feel the upcoming teasing. Nari grinned, leaning closer.
"Today is the dayy, I can feel itt" she whispered dramatically, dragging the letters of the last words.
"You're gonna blow him away with your genius."I rolled my eyes, trying to play it cool. "Yeah because nothing says 'impressive' like a presentation about photosynthesis made with Chat GPT last night."
Nari giggled, but Momo nudged me again.
"You never know! Maybe he's into 'smart girls' who know their chlorophyll." I couldn't help but laugh, but inside of me the nerves twisted tighter. I was already stressing about messing up my part and the thought of him watching me made my stomach flip even more. The first bell rang and the hallway buzzed with students rushing to their classes. I took the twentieth deep breath, forcing myself to focus. Showtime. As we walked into the science lab I could feel the weight of the morning's anticipation on my shoulders. We found our seats and I scanned the room. Nari and Momo were sitting together like always, leaving me alone a few rows behind them.
I shuffled through my notes, trying to calmy nerves. The sound of chairs scraping behind, in front and next to me was adding more to the mix of nervousness and frustration. God, I can't wait to get out of here. The class quickly filled up, the usual chatter echoing through the room. Just as I was about to review my lines one last time, the final bell rand and my teacher walked in with her hands full of papers.
"Alright everyone, settle down," she called over the noise.
"We've got a lot of presentations to get through today, so let's get started as soon as possible."I examined the classroom, noticing that most of the chairs were already taken. Then, of of the corner of my eye, I saw him scanning the room, looking for a place to sit. My heart skipped a beat as I realized that the only available seat was next to me. Oh no.
Before I started realizing it, he walked over to me, his casual, confident stride making me feel even more flustered. I focused on my notes, pretending not to notice, but I could feel the heat rising in my cheeks again.
"Mind if I sit here?" His voice was smooth, but the sound of it sent my nerves into overdrive. I looked up, trying to act nonchalant.
"Uh- yeah! Sure." I managed to say, quickly moving my bag of the chair next to me. He smiled - that smile - and sat down, pulling out his notes at if it was the most normal thing to do. It probably was for him.
Meanwhile I could barely breathe, I felt Nari and Momo watching from the other side of the room, undoubtedly exchanging looks, but I was too flustered to even glance their way. This was way too surreal.
I shifted in my seat, trying to focus on the upcoming task, but all I could think about was how close he was sitting next to me. Our arms just inches away from touching.
"Alright, let's get started."
