Jake's POV
The car was too quiet. I could barely breathe. Susan's sad face kept flashing in my mind as we drove away from the courthouse.
"Good job." Heeseung said, breaking the silence.
Something snapped inside me. "Fuck you." I spat out.
He scoffed, like it was all a joke. "Seems like you don't have a praise kink."
I turned to look at him. God, I wanted to grab the wheel and crash us both. End this nightmare once and for all. "It's better if you're gone." I said, my voice shaking.
"Why? Did you already find someone new?" he asked, his voice dripping with fake concern.
Rage boiled up inside me. "HOW COULD YOU THINK I CAN EVER FIND SOMEONE NEW, AFTER ALL YOU'VE FUCKING DONE TO ME?!" I screamed. My throat hurt from the force of it.
Heeseung pulled over. The way he looked at me sent chills down my spine. "...You've done that to yourself." he said, calm as ever.
I couldn't take it. My hand moved before I could think, slapping him hard across the face. I had to get out. I couldn't be near him anymore. But when I tried the door, it was locked.
Panic rose in my chest as I saw Heeseung's hand on the lock button. "Let me out." I said, trying to keep my voice steady.
"Once you get out of this car... chaos will come." he warned.
I swallowed hard. Part of me knew he was right, but I was so tired. Tired of the lies, the fear, all of it. "Let me out." I repeated.
The door clicked open. I practically fell out of the car, my legs shaky as I walked away. My heart was pounding. What did he mean by chaos? What else could possibly happen?
Suddenly, headlights lit up behind me. I jumped, my nerves shot. It was just Heeseung driving off, but it scared me all the same. I walked faster, almost running.
I didn't know where I was going. I just knew I had to get away. But deep down, I wondered: was there anywhere I could really hide from what I'd done? From what we'd both done?
When I got home, I expected to see Heeseung's car in the driveway. But it wasn't there. My heart raced as I hurried upstairs, drawn to the window like a magnet. Had he disappeared again? Left me alone with this mess?
But then I saw a car. Not Heeseung's - a police cruiser. It pulled up to Susan's house across the street. I watched as Jay got out and opened the back door. Susan emerged, looking small and tired. Jay gently guided her to her front door, ever the protective sheriff.
Just as I was about to step away, Jay looked up. Right at my window. I ducked behind the curtain, but couldn't resist peeking out. Jay was walking towards my house now, his face set in that concerned look I'd seen too often lately.
I hurried downstairs, my mind spinning. What did he want? Did he suspect something? The knock came just as I reached the bottom step. I took a deep breath, trying to calm my nerves, and opened the door.
Jay stood there, hat in hand, looking a bit unsure of himself. "Uh, hey... just wanted to check on ya," he said, his slight drawl more noticeable than usual.
"I'm okay," I lied, forcing a smile. "Thanks for asking."
Jay nodded, shifting his weight from one foot to the other. "Listen, I was thinkin'... maybe you'd like to grab a bite to eat? We could bring Heeseung along if he's up for it."
My stomach twisted at the mention of Heeseung's name. "He's, uh, sleeping actually. Long day in court and all."
"Right, of course," Jay said, looking a little relieved. Was I imagining that? "Well, how about just you and me then? Might do you good to get out for a bit."
