Weeks had passed since the incident with the knife-wielding attacker, but the memory still lingered fresh in Tawan's mind. She had hurt her hand in the struggle, but it wasn't the physical pain that bothered her. It was the look of fear in Ira's eyes, a look that haunted her every night. It was the first time Ira had faced such danger, and Tawan had promised herself that it would never happen again.
After returning to her apartment that night, despite Ira's pleas for her to stay, Tawan had immediately called Ira's father, Mr. Kraisee. The situation was escalating, and she needed to inform him of the growing threat.
---
The next morning, Tawan found herself sitting in Mr. Kraisee's lavish home, a stark contrast to her own modest apartment. The man was powerful, and his presence commanded the room. Tawan respected him for his influence and intelligence, but she knew there were enemies lurking, waiting to take him down. Amonsak, one of the biggest threats, was at the center of it all. He was ambitious, ruthless, and had his eyes set on destroying Kraisee's empire to rise in the business world.
Mr. Kraisee sat across from Tawan, his sharp eyes studying her as she spoke.
"I've been looking into the man responsible," Tawan said, her voice steady. "Amonsak is the one pulling the strings. He's been using others to do his dirty work, making it hard to trace anything back to him directly. But I think I have a way to get closer to him."
Mr. Kraisee raised an eyebrow, intrigued. "What's your plan?"
"I have a contact," Tawan explained. "A friend who's skilled in infiltration and disguises. His name is Somchai. The idea is to get Somchai hired by Amonsak—maybe as someone to hurt you or Ira. If we can get him inside, we can gather enough evidence to take Amonsak down."
The room was silent for a moment, the weight of her words hanging in the air. Mr. Kraisee leaned back in his chair, considering her plan.
"And what do you need from me?"
Tawan met his gaze without hesitation. "I need your support and your resources. Somchai can't do this without the right tools and funding. We need to make this operation look real enough that Amonsak will trust him."
Mr. Kraisee nodded, impressed by her determination. "I'll provide whatever you need. Money is not an issue. Just make sure my family is safe." His tone softened for a brief moment before hardening again. "But tell me something, Tawan."
Tawan stiffened, sensing the shift in his voice.
"Why are you going to such lengths?" Mr. Kraisee asked, his eyes narrowing. "You're just Ira's bodyguard. You're not part of this family. So why risk your life? Why care so much?"
The question caught Tawan off guard. She had prepared herself for many things, but not this. She paused, feeling the weight of the unspoken words in her heart, but she knew she couldn't tell him the truth—not the whole truth, at least.
"It's easier if nothing is targeted at Ira," she finally said, her voice betraying nothing of the storm within her. "If she's safe, it makes my job easier."
Mr. Kraisee didn't look entirely convinced, but he didn't press further. He nodded, accepting her answer for now. "Alright, Tawan. I trust you. Just make sure this plan works. And remember—if anything happens to my daughter, I'll hold you responsible."
Tawan stood, bowing her head respectfully. "Understood, sir. I won't let anything happen to her."
---
As Tawan walked out of Mr. Kraisee's house, she let out a slow breath, relieved that she had dodged the question. She hadn't lied to him, but she hadn't told him the whole truth either. The truth was far more complicated. The truth was that Tawan would do anything to keep Ira safe—not just because it was her job, but because she cared for Ira in ways she couldn't admit.
Tawan knew her feelings for Ira were growing, and it terrified her. Every time Ira looked at her with those soft, yearning eyes, Tawan felt her icy facade melt just a little more. But she couldn't let it happen. She was Ira's bodyguard, not her confidante, and certainly not someone she could love. Her duty was to protect Ira, not fall for her.
But it was becoming harder every day. On her days off, Tawan would often stay in her apartment, monitoring Ira's movements through the security cameras. She told herself it was for safety, but deep down, she knew it was because she wanted to see Ira—even if from a distance.
Ira, for her part, had been making advances. Small ones, at first—cooking meals for them both, offering to share moments of quiet companionship. Tawan hadn't expected Ira to be such a good cook, and it surprised her how much she craved the meals they shared. Ira's warmth, her mischievous smiles, her playful teasing—all of it chipped away at Tawan's defenses, little by little.
But Tawan knew she had to remain professional. She couldn't let her heart get in the way of her job, no matter how much it fluttered when Ira was near. Every day, Ira found new ways to surprise her, to make her feel something Tawan had long buried. And every day, Tawan fought against it, not knowing how much longer she could keep it locked inside.
She had to stay focused, especially now. Somchai was working his way into Amonsak's network, but it would take time. Time that Tawan wasn't sure they had. The threat against Ira was very real, and if anything went wrong, Tawan knew she might not be able to save her this time.
Tawan had told herself she was willing to die to protect Ira, but it wasn't just about duty anymore. It was about something much deeper, something she couldn't bring herself to name. For now, all she could do was stay close, protect Ira, and pray that her heart wouldn't betray her when the moment came.
