Aiah checked her phone for the third time in five minutes, her nerves buzzing as she sat on the edge of her bed. The text from Mikha was still open:
**Mikha**: Pick you up at 7. Dress comfy. I've got a surprise.
She glanced at the clock. 6:45 p.m. She was early, of course. Early and nervous, which wasn't a combination she liked. It wasn't a work dinner, or a group hangout with their friends where she could hide behind casual conversation. It was just her and Mikha, and whatever surprise he had planned.
*You've been out with him before,* she told herself. *This is just another casual hangout.*
But it wasn't. Not anymore.
Ever since that quiet moment in the café when Mikha had taken her hand, things had changed again. Their late-night texts had started to linger longer, their conversations growing more intimate. The secrecy was still there, but it had become harder to ignore what was building between them. And tonight... tonight felt different.
When she heard a soft knock at her apartment door, Aiah's heart jumped. She took a deep breath, brushing off her nerves, and opened the door to find Mikha leaning against the frame, dressed in a casual white t-shirt and jeans, a soft smile on his face.
"You ready?" he asked, his voice light, but there was an edge of something else—something deeper in his gaze.
Aiah nodded, grabbing her jacket. "Yeah, let's go."
As they stepped out into the cool evening, Aiah noticed something parked by the curb that made her stop in her tracks. "Is that... your surprise?"
Mikha grinned, motioning toward the vintage Volkswagen van parked in front of her building. It was painted a soft sky blue, with wide, friendly headlights that seemed to wink at her in the fading light. "What do you think?"
Aiah laughed, her tension easing slightly. "You've been holding out on me. Since when do you own a van?"
"Borrowed it from a friend," Mikha said with a shrug. "Seemed like the perfect ride for tonight."
Aiah raised an eyebrow, curiosity piqued. "And what exactly is happening tonight?"
"You'll see," Mikha said with a playful smile. He opened the van's passenger door for her with a mock flourish, and she rolled her eyes, climbing inside.
The interior was cozy and unexpectedly charming. Soft blankets were piled in the back, and small twinkling fairy lights were strung along the roof, casting a warm glow over the entire space. The van smelled faintly of fresh pine and lavender, and there was an old-school cassette player on the dashboard, softly playing a familiar tune.
Aiah recognized it immediately—*Nothing* by Bruno Major. The delicate piano notes filled the van as she settled into the seat, her heart doing that annoying flip-flop thing it always did around Mikha now.
"Okay, points for ambiance," Aiah said, trying to keep her tone light as Mikha climbed into the driver's seat.
"Good," he replied, smiling as he started the engine. "Because we're not done yet."

The drive to the park was peaceful, the city lights fading into the distance as they made their way toward a quieter, more secluded area. Aiah leaned her head against the window, watching the trees and dimly lit streets pass by. The steady hum of the van's engine mixed with the soft crooning of Bruno Major in the background, and for a moment, everything felt... easy.
There was something about being with Mikha like this—just the two of them, with no pretense, no need to hide behind banter or sarcasm—that made Aiah feel lighter. She wasn't sure when it had happened, but somewhere along the way, the tension between them had shifted from antagonistic to something else entirely.
