SEVENTEEN

Josephine Rankin woke up with two heads resting upon her body.

One, being a Monégasque that was resting his head in her lap, with her hands having obviously been ruffling through the brown locks upon his head, soft snores leaving his lips.

The second was an Australian who's head was so far back against her shoulder that it almost looked like his neck had snapped during his sleep, his mouth open as he snored, his nose scrunching up slightly with every deep breath in.

She couldn't remember falling asleep the way that she did, but she knew that it would have been a good night, with the whole group of friends coming together to help cheer Arthur up after he had suffered a bad breakup.

The Rankin woman giggled to herself as she relished in her company, happiness flooding her body that even when they were asleep, that she still had her boys keeping her company.

The Australian began to stir as his head began to move, his eyes fluttering open to see the face of his Josie, albeit upside down.

"G'day, how's it hanging?"

Daniel Ricciardo shot up as he questioned her, hearing soft giggles leaving her lips, her smile wide, wrinkles forming around her eyes from its intensity, her dimples prominent.

"You snore like a ship's horn." Josie laughed at him, trying to make sure that she didn't move her body too much to allow Arthur time to rest since she knew that he needed it. The poor boy was exhausted.

The Australian formula one driver turned his head abruptly to the side to glance around the room, his eyes picking up that most of his friends were passed out, though a couple seemed to be gone already.

"And you giggle in your sleep." Daniel raised one of his eyebrows, a smirk plastered on to his lips, wiggling his dark brows up and down once he noticed that she was rolling her eyes.

"I would when I dream of you."

"Wha-you dream of me?"

"No, of course not." The Rankin woman deadpanned, keeping a straight face. "I dream mainly of Charles and Arthur. They do a lot of shit to try and make me smile. It works about minety seven percent of the time."

Daniel let a small huff leave his lips, a momentary flash of sadness crossing over his face though it vanished just as quick as it had appeared.

"But if I did happen to dream of you, it would be great." Josie added after a short moment of silence, a soft giggle leaving her lips.

Daniel immediately wrapped his arms around the top half of her body and pulled her against his chest, trying not to move her upper body too much to avoid waking up Arthur, his soft pink lips pressing softly against her temple, her face lighting up as he did so.

Josephine listened closely as her ear rested against the chest of the Australian, right where his heart was, which meant that she could hear every single beat, the sound calming, peaceful, and relaxing to her.

She lightly tapped her finger against his chest in the rhythm of his heartbeat, her eyes fluttering slowly closed from just how calm her body became, goosebumps licking at her skin from where his hands were resting on her arms, feeling safe amongst his own.

She felt as if she was protected in his arms.

As if she was protected from the whole world and every single thing within it.

As if Daniel Ricciardo could fight off her demons with just a simple smile, the very smile that she loved and cherished, that he could keep her safe for all eternity, make butterflies erupt in her stomach every time that he stared at her, her cheeks to ache from the smile she always gave him, the way that his infectious happiness was spreading to her just by being in his presence, the way that her face, neck and ears would tinge pink whenever he complimented her.

As if she did not mind at all that he would walk over to her apartment every morning to check on her, greet and treat her with breakfast, or take long walks with her at random times in the day, even the night, or that he would get carried away telling her all about the stories and gossip that he had heard, sometimes getting a little bit too carried away to the point where she had to distract him with food, or that he would bring her a bouquet of flowers after every time that he had been away for a race where she had not joined him.

As if he had spent weeks getting to know her brother Blake and befriending him, finding out everything that he needed to know about their parents and how they were never to be around Josie due to the way that they had treated her, as if he had joined her visiting the gravestones of her grandparents and sang their favorite song in the hope that their ghosts would like him.

As if he stayed with her for hours on end after a nightmare and cuddle her until she fell back asleep, sometimes staying the whole night cuddling her in order for her to have a proper good night sleep, or how he would cradle her face if she had been crying and wipe her tears away until her cheeks were dry, or how he would take his time to remove her makeup if she was too tired or drunk and not stop until it was all properly off, completing her skincare routine for her.

She could always count on him to cheer her up and make her happy.

It had shocked her just how much she had changed since they had become reacquainted with one another, having been grief stricken and stuck in a permanent downward spiral until she listened to Valterri.

She owed the Finnish man so much.

When he had told her to share the grief, she had not expected the change within her that had occurred, but now, looking back, it was evident.

Of course, it wasn't just Daniel that she had to thank for saving her, because everyone had a part in saving her.

Even Sebastian.

They taught her how to be herself once again, to become a woman who she had thought had died in two thousand and fourteen, but here she was, just as happy as she was back then.

The tear within her heart had somehow been stitched back together by just a couple of hugs, some smiles and a bunch of laughter, and she was so grateful to everybody for rescuing her.

But Daniel?

Daniel had done far more, he had done so much more just that. Daniel had taught her how to truly love and fall in love once again.

She knew.

She knew that she had fallen in love with an Australian, by the name of Daniel Joseph Ricciardo.
