Pain.
It was an unfamiliar and terrifying sensation. It radiated through my body, a constant, throbbing reminder of my injury. I didn't know how it had happened, but I knew that it was bad. My tail, usually strong and powerful, was now weak and cumbersome. I could move it, but every time I did, the pain flared up, making me scream out in agony.
The salt water that surrounded me stung against the open wound, adding to my pain. I had to get away, find a place to hide and rest while I healed. I tried to turn, to start swimming, but my injured tail wouldn't cooperate. I let out a strangled noise, the closest thing to a whimper a siren can make.
As the pain and weakness consumed me, I became aware of something else. A strange, unfamiliar feeling, a sensation that I had never experienced before. It was panic. I was alone, hurt, and vulnerable. I was usually the one doing the hunting, not the other way around. But now, I was the prey.
With as much effort as I could muster, I managed to turn my head, trying to get a sense of my surroundings. To my horror, I saw a ship. A human ship. If they found me like this, I would be captured or worst. I would be killed.
A mix of fear and desperation filled my chest. I had to hide, had to find a way to escape. But my injured tail made it impossible for me to swim far or fast. I was trapped, at the mercy of whoever found me.
The pain in my tail flared up again, making me cry out. The sound carried through the water, echoing in the vastness of the ocean. Suddenly, I heard voices. Human voices. They were talking, getting louder as they got closer.
I froze, fear constricting my chest. The voices were coming from the ship. They had heard me. I tried to wriggle and squirm, trying to put some distance between myself and the ship. But every movement was agony, reminding me that I was injured and vulnerable.
The voices grew louder, closer. I could make out individual words now, the human language unfamiliar and harsh to my ears. "What was that sound?" "It sounded like it came from over there." "I think it's a siren."
My heart raced in my chest, the pain in my tail forgotten in the face of the imminent danger. The humans were looking for me, and if they found me like this, injured and weak, I was as good as dead. I had to hide, had to find a place to conceal myself.
I desperately looked around, looking for any place to hide. The ocean floor was too shallow, providing little cover. The ship was too big, I would be seen immediately. I was stuck, out in the open with no way to escape.
Just then, I heard a familiar sound, one that sent a chill down my spine. Nets. Human nets, being dropped into the water. They were searching for me, and they were getting closer.
..
Panic overcame me, my injured tail starting to thrash against the water, causing me even more pain. I had to get away, had to find a way to avoid the nets. But I was too weak, too hurt to swim fast. I was trapped. With a final, desperate effort, I tried to turn, to evade the approaching nets. But it was too late. I felt the rough, tangled mesh of the net wrap around me, ensnaring my weakened body.
I struggled, trying to free myself from the net, but it was no use. The more I struggled, the tighter it became, the mesh digging into my scales and further aggravating my injured tail.
I let out a strangled cry, pain and fear mixing in my voice. The humans above the water shouted, their voices filled with excitement and triumph. "We got it!" "It's a siren!" "Pull it up!"
The nets began to tighten around me, pulling me up towards the surface. The pain in my tail intensified, making me cry out in agony. I was being pulled out of the water, towards the humans and their ship.
