The ride back to the hotel was awkward and quiet, neither dared to speak for the last words spoken seemed to be too much for both of them to stomach.
Why was she like this? Ruining everything that she ended up cherishing the most? Maybe love wasn't the weed, maybe it was her. She was the parasite that killed the flower. That choked out it's supply of nutrients until it died of starvation.
Back at the hotel both of them showered and were doing their own things on their side of the room, she just simply sat staring out the window with her back faced to him while he laid on his side on his phone with his back to her.
She gripped her pant leg tightly with her jaw clenched so hard it felt her teeth might shatter, this silence was killing her but she couldn't break it. If she did it would just be even more cruel for him.
And for herself.
Amaris felt her eyes sting as tears welled threatening to spill over as she stared down at the well lit city below.
"We gotta wake up early tomorrow. I'll be setting the alarm."
Jumping slightly at Tōru's voice she turned to him and saw him setting the alarm for 3 am, they really did have a early flight... She watched him, he looked... Gloomy.
"Oh alright." She would respond softly, he'd get back into bed and lay down on his side facing away from her, the room almost completely dark besides the light pollution from the city outside their window.
Amaris wanted to say something to him so bad but she couldn't find anything to say. So she rolled over onto her side and stared out the window until she felt her eye lids start to droop and then fell asleep without a good night being shared between them.
Waking up with a startle as the alarm blared, she sat up and rubbed the sleep from her eyes and looked as Tōru turned off the alarm and walked to his bag and then to the bathroom with his clothes to change. Though she on the other hand just put on a bra and brushed her hair. It was too early to get all dressed up.. And she didn't feel in the mood for it either.
They brushed their teeth without a comment and they ate breakfast without talking either. Even the car ride in the back of the taxi was dead silent.
The whole trip back was silent, excruciatingly silent... Though she tried sleeping to pass the time, which worked, yet when she woke up when the plane began to land she didn't receive a good morning nor any acknowledgment. What did she expect?
She ruined something that she wasn't sure how to even fix- if there was even a fix for it..
Amaris was dropped off at her apartment, he helped her carry her luggage upstairs but that was it, he simply turned around and waved goodbye before getting into his car and driving off. She stood and watched as his car disappeared before she turned and walked inside, closing the door harshly behind her.
She didn't even have time to unpack her luggage before her mother was already knocking on her door excited to talk about the trip.
"Here mom, I bought this for you." Amaris said with a small smile as she handed her mom a glass encapsulated cherry blossom, which her moms reaction to it made her grin.
"Oh honey! It's beautiful!" Her mom gushed and placed it carefully in the box before embracing Amaris tightly.
Rocking back and forth in the hug she would let out a deep sigh, it was one of content, yet in the back of her mind she still felt the claws of guilt.
"So.... Did anything happen between you and handsome?"
"MOM?"
Her mother laughed and sat back down on the couch and looked up at her still standing daughter.
