Sweat beaded across her forehead, this was an intense match between another powerhouse school, Lomas High School, though she knew her team could win, they would win. She was their captain and she would lead them to victory no matter what it cost.
The other teams number five had a scary strong spike, but Amaris was determined to stop her spike, if she could at least slow it down some for their libero to receive it then she'd be satisfied.
Leaping up she'd spring her hands down to stop the ball, feeling it smack against her fingers and fly past them bending them back slightly, though it only stung slightly, she turned and yelled.
"ONE TOUCH!"
She smiled proudly as their libero received the ball beautifully, it flying up into the air towards their setter, who the team had given the nickname toss machine due to her always accurate and perfect sets.
Amaris backed up and started her approach, they were at 23-20, barley ahead of the other team but she was about to change that, they were going to get to set point and win this last game and receive the national trophy, they were going to interview her and she would thank her coach and her teammates for helping her get this far.
And then her dreams all came crumbling down.
She swung her arms back and stepped down to push herself up into the air and fly for the perfect set she had been given, when there was an audible snap.
Her mouth opened in a silent scream as she fell backward, pain shooting up her right leg, the ball hit the floor and someone caught her before she hit the floor, though she couldn't tell who it was, the pain was so intense her vision was cloudly and her heart pounding in her ears.
"AND NUMBER 1 AMARIS OTERO IS DOWN! LOOKS LIKE A SERIOUS INJURY!" One of the announcers voices blarred over the speakers.
The crowd would oo and gasp, the court silent besides her teammates trying to figure out was wrong and her coach rushing to get the medic.
Amaris bit her tongue as she laid on the court, trying to stop the tears from dropping down her cheeks, she wasn't going to cry, that's what she kept repeating over and over in her head.
I'm not gonna cry
I'm not gonna cry
I'm not gonna cry
I'm not gonna cry
I can't cry.She was carried off the court by her coach and the medic as they took her into the medic room where they laid her on the table.
"The ambulance has been called Amaris, just breathe for me honey, just breathe." Her coach would say comfortingly brushing the hair out of her face and smoothing it down.
Amaris looked into the eyes of her coach, her eye brows furrowed in pain as she struggled to breathe as panic, pain and adrenaline courses through her body.
"Camila please, please I can still play I-" she'd stammer between gasping breaths, though Camila would shake her head at Amaris.
"Honey I'm so sorry, you've tore your achilles."
Those words felt like a knife, twisting into her heart then yanked out, the months after felt like the sky was falling down all around her. Her team lost nationals due to her injury, and she had lost any chance she had at redeeming herself due to the fact it was her senior year, and with an injury to the extent as hers was the doctor and physical therapist told her playing pro volleyball would only set her up for an even worse tear.
Everything she had dreamed off, all the years she spent to achieve her goal, all gone when she had her finger tips on it. It was in her grasp when it was all ripped from her, sending her back to nothing.
