you're always leaving

Elena's POV
Jeremy hasn't said a word all the way home after Vicky's death. As he goes inside, Brooke follows him frantically as she says "Jeremy. Please talk to me." Dean pauses waiting for me to go inside, i look at Stefan and then back at Dean i say "can you give us a minute?" Dean hesitates before going inside.

I sit down on the bench on the porch, as Stefan sits next to me.. i say "i can't believe this is happening, Jeremy is never going to get over this." Stefan says "I'm sorry Elena." I say "it's not your fault Stefan, i just wish he didn't have to carry this around with him.. he's already been through so much." As Stefan puts his arm around me, I say "what about compulsion? Could you do it? Takeaway the memories." Stefan stutters, clearly unsure he says "i could but it might not work, he could start to remember because of my lack of human blood." I pout, trying to take in what he's saying as Damon's voice echos across the front lawn "i could do it?" I stand up, as Damon gets closer he says "if that's what you want?" I turn back to Stefan and say "it's what i want." Damon says "alright .." As the door opens quickly. Brooke says "what the hell are you doing here?! Don't you think you've done enough." I say "calm down Brooke, he can help." She looks at me and raises an eyebrow and says "how?" I say "he can erase the memories."

Brookes POV

I can't believe what I'm hearing.. i laugh slightly before turning to Damon and sternly saying "there is no way in hell, that is happening." Elena says "it's the only way Brooke" i say "oh Elena honey.. you are so lost, you don't even know how lost you are.." she looks at me, slightly confused. I say "what we're going to do is be there for Jeremy, we're going to talk to him, let him cry and be angry over Vicky's death.. it will take time but he'll come out the other side, he's strong enough. That is the human way." Damon says "that's stupid, i can cure him now." I say "there's no quick fix to grief." Elena says "but he's going to know about vampires?" I say "maybe.. and if he does.. he'll hate them, and i can live with that." Damon steps toward me, as Dean appears from behind with a gun pointed at Damon he says "I'd back off if i were you." Damon scoffs. Elena says "please just let him do this Brooke." I say "Elena, honey there is no safety is vampires .. we're going to deal with this as a family. Not by erasing Jeremy's mind." Dean says "get inside Elena." She's being stubborn, so i repeat "get inside Elena, now." She hesitates but goes inside, Damon says "you're making a mistake." I say "the mistake would be trusting you." With that I step inside and close the door.

Elena says "i think you're making a mistake.. they can help." I laugh, as I look to Dean he says "i 'm gonna go and check on Jeremy." I sit on the back of the sofa and say "Elena, all vampires do is hurt." Elena says "so what because you were attacked by a random vampire and a hunter saved you, you choose hunters?" I'm shocked. that's my sister. I say "yes. I choose hunters. I choose humans over downworlders. I choose safety for you and Jeremy. So you don't have to agree with me, but as your guardian you do have to listen to me." She scoffs and says "i trust Stefan." I say "oh my god Elena .. i know.. you feel like you trust him, i bet you feel like you love him, right?" She's silent. I say "they're dangerous and until you realize that you're in danger." She says "why? Why do you hate them so much?" I stand up from the back of the sofa and say "i had a best friend when i was 16.. we did everything together." Elena says "Lucy Bennett?" I say "yea but I'm talking about Meredith Fell.. it was the three of us forever and always." Elena says "why have I never met her before?" I place a hand on Elena's shoulder and say "she's died. She was 18 had just got into college her life was about to start and then she was gone." Elena is silent, i say "Lucy and i were broken and to this day i don't like to talk about it." Elena says "why are you telling me this?" I say "i need you to know because Damon killed her." I see the shock in her eyes and she's trying to process the information I've just given her. I say "Stefan tried to make amends afterwards but it didn't matter .. apologies weren't going to bring her back.. so Lucy and i decided to make a pact to leave for college and never look back that was the plan .. until..." Elena says "mom and dad died?" I nod. She takes a breath, i say "I've seen vampires in action Elena. I need you to trust me. Stefan might be better than Damon but he is still a vampire." Elena nods and says "i understand." As she goes upstairs i head into the kitchen.

Taking a deep breath, i make a glass of water as Dean comes into the kitchen as he slips his phone into his pocket. I take a drink, noticing the duffel bag in his hand, he looks so serious, i say "what's wrong?" He sighs, walking over to me he says "Sam called. He needs my help on a case.." I can guess the next words out of his mouth 'i need to leave' GOD i knew what his job was .. i understood that he wasn't going to stay with us forever but it didn't make it easy. I put the glass down on the worktop, and say "oh?" I turn away from him to try and keep strong. I say "so when do you have to leave?" He puts his bag down on the floor as he steps towards me and says "tonight." I take a deep breath as he places a hand on my shoulder he says "Brooke?" I can't bring myself to look at him, until he turns me around to look at him. I say "for how long?" He shakes his head and says "i don't know.." I close my eyes as he says "i wish i could stay here with you Brooke, this is a snapshot of a life i could have and i  know I'd be happy but..."  i say "saving people, hunting things .. the family business?" He nods and i say "i understand Dean, i know what you do, when i called you i never expected you to stay here forever.. i just got used to having you here, helping me.." he smiles as he gently cups my face with his hand, he says "if you need anything. I am a phone call away, always." I nod and words seem so pointless right now that i just lunge forward pulling him into a hug, as his arms wrap around me i say "promise me I'll see you again?" He says "of course."  I release him from the hug as much as i don't want to. He picks up his bag and he says "can i say bye to Jeremy and Elena?" I nod as we head out into the hallway he places his bag by the door running upstairs and going into Jeremy's bedroom.

I stay downstairs because I'm not sure i can take it. Jeremy has grown so close to Dean and even Elena has started to come around. As Dean comes downstairs, Elena and Jeremy come out of their rooms, clearly not wanting to accept the fact he's leaving.
He picks up his bag in the hall and i walk him out to his car. As he chucks his bag in the backseat i say "don't forget me Dean Winchester." He says "never going to happen." He reaches into his pocket and pulls out a gold chain as he holds it up and his father's ring is hanging on the chain. I say "is that the ring your dad gave you?" He says "I want you to have it." I say "Dean... you love that ring" he steps behind my placing the chain on my neck, as he does up the clasp he says "something to remember me by." I hold the ring in my hands, as i take a deep breath turning to him i say "as if i could ever forget you." He smirks slightly and there's a moment of stillness between us, every bone in my body is aching to scream don't go. Stay with me this time!  But instead i say "be safe Winchester." He nods and says "you too.. but really i should be warning the vampires in town because the Salvatore's don't stand a chance." I smile and in the stillness, as he looks deeply into my eyes as he opens the car door, i decide to lean forward and kiss him passionately, as he kisses me back, my hands slide up to his shoulders.. i pull away slightly and say "that's to remember me by.." i bite my lip slightly. Dean smirks as he kisses me again spinning me around and pressing my back to the side of the impala, his hands in my hair as my hands fall on his shoulders .. I'm losing myself in his kiss.. we break after a few minutes and he says "I'm going to have to go because if i kiss you again i won't leave." I nod and say "i know." He opens the door to the impala, as he gets in i say "go help your brother, but come back to me." He takes my hand and says "i promise." I step back as he closes the car door i smile as the engine fires up. I hold my necklace with Deans' ring between my fingers. As he drives away .. he waves and i watch him go down the road and I keep watching the Impala drive away until i can't see it anymore. ..
