tell me the taste ain't good to ya
So, the power being out during the third shift isn't ideal, true.
And the thunder roaring outside also scares the living daylights out of me, yes.
But I am stuck with my favorite coworker, and we have access to all the popcorn left over from the earlier shifts, so that is a plus. I suppose.
"Uhm, so I called the power company, and they said they won't be able to get here until like 3-ish."
"Shit."
Baekhyun nibbles his strawberry lips anxiously, bouncing his leg. "I know. I guess we just have to tough it out for about 2 hours, then."
My tummy tumbles- partially out of dread, facing the darkened movie theater, and partially because it is just us two in the whole building.
I should be thrilled- I've had a crush on him for months!- but I wish we could spend time together in less frightening circumstances.
"It's getting cold," I decide to say, a shiver skittering over my body.
"Yeah," he says, shifting our only source of light, a flimsy lantern, toward me, "I think I saw some blankets in the utility closet?"
"Wanna head there and check?" I ask.
"Together?"
"Sure," I heave myself off of my swivel chair.
I nab the lantern and we set off, less than a foot between us for fear of unintentional separation. This old building groans and creaks with each gust of wind that appears outside, making me wince.
"Saeri said this place is haunted," he says with a nervous laugh, "She was probably making it up, right?"
"Uh, right," I say, stepping closer to him as goosebumps dapple my arms.
Once we arrive at the nearest closet, we scour it for blankets, but the closest thing we find are some old towels.
"I suppose these are better than nothing," he says, pulling a few off the shelf, "I actually remembered I have a spare hoodie in my locker you can borrow."
"Okay," I reply, holding up the lantern for him, "Should we stay in the office?"
Baekhyun rubs his chin thoughtfully. "I feel like the best place to camp out is the ticket booth. It's near enough to the front entrance so when the dispatcher comes, we can let them in. But it's also right next to the snacks." A mischievous glint sparkles in his eyes.
"I call dibs on milk duds," I say, following him back to the office where he grabs the sweatshirt for me.
"Here, since you've only got a t-shirt on, put this on."
"You really know how to take charge," I joke, and he gives me a bashful grin that makes my heart pull a crazy acrobatic move.
"Sorry! I'm used to telling my little sisters what to do at home," he rubs his neck awkwardly, "I didn't mean to be bossy."
"No, it's fine. It's cute," I shimmy into his hoodie.
It has the same delicious bourbon vanilla cologne clinging to it that he always smells like. Oh, heavenly.
"Thanks for this, Byun. It's comfy," I tap the round of his nose affectionately.
"It's nothing," he shrugs as we walk up to the ticket booth, "I don't want you getting sick."
Awkward silence threatens to smother us once we arrive at the booth- it is rather smaller than I had remembered it being.
"Hmm," he scratches the back of his head, "Uh, guess we're getting cozy tonight, then."
