'I wait patiently, She's gonna notice me, It's OK, We're the best of friends'

'All my days, From sprinkler splashes to fireplace ashes, I waited ages to see you there.'

There had been so many boys that people had assumed Linh was dating.

It was one of the few things that made her really angry.

The prime example of this was Wylie. During his recovery, she had spent most of her time with him. In that time, they had become really good friends. As she had worked to heal him, they had talked constantly. They had fun, funny conversations, about whatever. And serious conversations, too. He had talked to her for hours about his parents, things that he had told no one else in full, and she told him about her parents, and about how, in some ways, she still loved them. About her time and Exillium, about living in Wildwood.

With each other, they were more vulnerable than with anyone else, and they began to know each other so, so well.

It was great for Linh to have someone who, despite how much she loved him, wasn't her Emo, overprotective brother. And it was great for Wylie to have someone who wasn't his adoptive father, who was riddled with his own grief.

But then, people began to assume things. The first person who guessed that Linh and Wylie were together was Teirgan. She hadn't really minded this. He had asked Wylie casually if he liked her, and, when the answer had been negative, Teirgan fully believed him.

Some days, Teirgan had even come to talk with them, which had been really nice. In one of these discussions, Tiergan and Wylie had become the only two people to know the truth, which Teirgan especially was incredibly understanding about.

But others were not so easily unconvinced.

Take Sophie & Co, for example, a name she and Wylie had jokingly made up, which consisted of Sophie, Keefe, Fitz, Dex and Biana, along with sometimes Stina, Maruca and even Marella or Tam, though they generally referred to the last few by name. Sophie & Co had begun to assume that Linh and Wylie had feelings for each other basically the day that Linh had volunteered to help heal him. And, as their friendship grew, their suspicions only grew larger.

This infuriated Linh so much that it took her a while to figure out why. When she finally did, she only grew angrier. She was mad, she discovered, because if she was spending that much time with a girl her age, the girl would be seen by Linh's peers as Linh's "Older friend", or 'Role model'. No one would even think that their relationships stretched beyond friendship.

But since Wylie was a boy, even though, to him, she was a minor, everyone suspected that they were together.

And it wasn't just Wylie.

There was also Fitz.

And Dex.

And no one, throughout all of this, once suspected that the person she actually liked was not a boy.

She was a girl.

One day, when she and that girl were together though, everything changed.

Marella had -thankfully- visited Linh at Choralmere, and the two of them were on a porch swing at the back of the house, far enough away from the waves to not overwhelm Linh, and close enough in case Marella caught something on fire.

They had been silent for quite a while, and it was getting a little awkward when Linh said abruptly, "Marella, can I ask you something?"

"Yeah, sure!" said Marella, looking up at her.
