The episode begins with the live viewing of a Pokemon match between two trainers, one using a Gengar and the other using a Nidorino. The Gengar starts off with Night Slash, but the Nidorino evades the attack and counters with Horn Attack, only to be knocked away. Meanwhile, all around in the bleachers of the stadium, multiple spectators continue to cheer for either side to win, as the commentator begins to spectate the fight.

Commentator: (from their booth) And Nidorino begins the battle with a Horn Attack. (Gengar leaps off Nidorino to avoid it) Oh, but Gengar bounces right back! (Gengar uses Hypnosis) And there it is, the Hypnosis power of Gengar! (Nidorino falls asleep) This could be the end of Nidorino... (Nidorino gets recalled) Wait! The trainer recalls Nidorino. Which Pokemon will he use now?

Almost as if they heard the commentator, Nidorino's trainer pulls out a green Pokeball from their pocket and throws it forward, as Gengar leaps away from it. After instantly landing onto the battlefield, the Pokeball opens up and out comes a towering snake-like creature made out of stone, which roars at the Ghost-type Pokemon in front of it.

Commentator: (from their booth) Oh, it's Onix! Now this giant Pokemon is on the attack! (Onix attacks, but Gengar leaps away) Ho-ho! But Gengar jumps aside!

As the battle and the commentator continue on, the scene changes to reveal the same fight playing on a TV in a room filled with Pokemon-based merchandise, as a young boy slips on two green fingerless gloves, while wearing a red and white cap with a green "L" stylized onto it, a blue jacket that covers a dark teal T-shirt, blue jeans, and black and white sneakers that are decorated with red dots.

Young Boy: (narrating to himself) Yes, I am Ash.

Narrator: Ash Ketchum is a boy from Pallet Town.

Ash: (tying his shoes) And now that I'm ten, I can finally get my Pokemon license.

Narrator: Ten-year-olds can get a beginner Pokemon from Professor Oak, the town's Pokemon expert.

Ash: (puts on his iconic cap) I will journey to gain the wisdom of Pokemon training, (grabs a Voltorb figure from his desk) and I hereby declare to the Pokemon of the world, I will be a Pokemon master. (poses with the figure in his hand) Pokemon Master! That is what I'll-

???: (sternly) Ash!! Get to bed!!

A sudden female voice with a strict tone interrupts Ash from his declaration, causing him to toss the figure in surprise, which is caught be the female that has just entered the room, that being his own mother, Delia Ketchum. Upon immediately catching it, the Voltorb figure opens to reveal it's actually a clock, with a Pidgey inside that even chirps, and the current time being eleven at night.

Delia: (still sternly) It's 11 o'clock and you should be asleep.

Ash: (sulks and protests) But tomorrow I begin my Pokemon journey. I can't sleep.

Delia: Well, if you can't sleep, you should at least get ready for tomorrow. (grabs the TV remote) Here, watch this.

With the push of a button, Delia changes the channel from the exciting match still raging on at the Pokemon League over to an informative show, which involves separate pictures of three different Pokemon being presented, and Professor Oak himself standing nearby with a metallic pointer in his hands.

Professor Oak: (on the TV) Good evening, Pallet. Tomorrow's the biggest day for the newest class of Pokemon students. I'd like to introduce you to Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle. Each one is avail able for new trainees. Which one shall you choose?
