1. Fantasy Fiction:
a. Eyes of the Earth: Excerpt
Sere winced as a bullet grazed her shoulder, a trail of red welling in it's wake. She had to run, she had to get out of here. Before she was brutally murdered by the psychopaths that were trying to swarm her so that they could have the pleasure of burning her alive.
Sere was from a very special bloodline, a bloodline that would make her a deity to some and the devil to others. It all started a thousand years ago. One stormy night in a small settlement, there was born a baby girl to a farmer couple with one peculiarity that made her stand out amongst all who lived there. In a world where people had eyes that mimicked the sea, the grass and golden amber, this girl was an enigma. She had eyes the colour of freshly tilled earth, magnificently clear and enrapturing any who laid eyes on her. She was quiet for a babe, crying only on occasion and peering out at anything and everything with a curiousity that was unparalleled in a child of her age. The story transcended borders, the words venerate and fearful at the same time. No one knew what to make of this child.
Not even a fortnight after she was born, another child with those same eyes was born in a seemingly random merchant's house about halfway across the world. When the merchant came to know that his baby boy was not the only outlier in this world, he undertook a journey to unite the two, believing it to be his life's purpose. When the two children met at the mere age of 7, there seemed to be an instant connect, one that existed well into their older years. Falling in love was only natural and soon children with the same brown eyes were born of the same temperament as their parents, and so the cycle continued. The clan was named Lifre, a word in the local dialect meaning unusual.
The world took its time, but soon came to realise exactly what was so enrapturing and so different about these brown eyed humans. The truth was an extra thing in them, flowing through their veins, shimmering just under their skin, flashing in their eyes and exuding from them like an aura. It was why they could fly in the wind, why the flowers in their garden bloomed year-round , even in the bitter cold, and why they could fashion all manners of things from nothing but pieces of wood or a handful of charcoal.
As each generation of brown-eyed children were born, they were treated like royalty and this continued for quite some time. Until the first blue-eyed child was born to the youngest child of the youngest child. Taking the birth of Viraelia, as she was named, as an omen, the entire clan of Lifre believed that their magic was in danger, and that it was entirely Viraelia's doing. That was the beginning of the end.
The people of the world turned on them suddenly. They came in the middle of the night,
The Lifre were rumoured to have built a city in the icy peaks of the Himalayas, unable to be found by anyone except one of their own and a sanctuary for all Lifre. Which she was, now that the people in her town had found out about her. One missing contact, having fallen out of her eye during the panic of a fire, had led to her being caught, and she had to flee then and find her way to the hidden city. If she lived to reach it, that is.
