Kara's days were settling into a rhythm, one defined by her dual responsibilities—balancing her classes in chemical engineering at Metropolis University with caring for Kal. The material was simple, almost too simple. Her professors thought her gifted, and the students around her were in awe of how easily she grasped complex subjects. Yet, as much as she excelled in the classroom, Kara's mind was always elsewhere—on Kal.
Kal was growing fast, in the way only Kryptonian biology could. His eyes were bright and curious, and while he remained a baby, each new day brought something more—more energy, more strength, more awareness of the world around him. Kara watched him closely, always protective, always with the sense that every moment mattered, not just for Kal's growth but for the danger it might invite.
At the farm, things felt stable enough. The Kents were more than supportive, giving Kara the kind of grounding presence she hadn't realized she needed. But even with their kindness and their help in looking after Kal, Kara was reluctant to leave her baby's side for too long. Every time she did, a pang of anxiety would rise within her, a nagging worry that something might happen. She'd only been on Earth for a short time, but the challenges already weighed heavily on her.
In the midst of this, Diana Prince had become a regular part of Kara's life. What started as an investigation into the strange activities in Smallville had transformed into something else entirely. Diana visited frequently, often under the pretense of checking in, but Kara could sense there was more to it. Diana had a presence about her that was calming, yet it stirred something within Kara—a sense of understanding, connection, and... something deeper.
It was during one of these routine visits that Diana approached Kara with a proposition that felt slightly out of character.
Diana stood at the edge of the Kent farmhouse, watching Kal as he toddled unsteadily across the porch. His tiny fingers clutched at the air, and a delighted smile spread across his face when Kara lifted him effortlessly, cradling him against her chest.
"Kara," Diana began, her voice unusually soft. She had been thinking about this for a while but had hesitated. "I was wondering... Would you like to have dinner with me tomorrow evening?"
Kara glanced up from Kal, a hint of surprise flashing across her face. "Dinner?" she asked, her Kryptonian-accented English lilting with curiosity. She shifted Kal in her arms, his sleepy eyes blinking as he settled against her.
"Yes," Diana replied, her gaze steady. "I thought it would be a good way for us to spend more time together, outside of... well, everything else." She smiled, a warm and genuine gesture that softened her otherwise stoic demeanor. "I'd enjoy the company. And you can bring Kal, of course."
Kara hesitated, glancing down at the baby in her arms. Diana had been nothing but kind, and something about her invitation felt different—like a chance to step out of the bubble Kara had been living in since their arrival on Earth.
"Alright," Kara said finally, her lips curving into a small smile. "I'd like that."
The next evening, Kara found herself standing in front of Diana's apartment in downtown Metropolis. She had Kal securely strapped in a baby carrier on her chest, his tiny hands clutching at her shirt. He looked up at her with wide, curious eyes, sensing the new environment.
Kara had opted for simple clothing—jeans and a loose sweater that allowed her freedom of movement while still looking presentable. She didn't need to dress up, but there was something about this dinner that felt important. Not in a formal way, but in the sense that it was something different, something special.
Diana greeted her at the door, dressed casually in a soft blue blouse and fitted pants. She smiled warmly when she saw Kara with Kal.
"You didn't have to bring him if it would have been easier for you," Diana said, stepping aside to let them in.
Kara shook her head. "No, it's fine. I don't like being away from him for too long. He's still so young."
"I understand," Diana replied, leading them into the living room. "He's precious. You're a wonderful mother, Kara."
Kara blushed slightly at the compliment. She didn't often think of herself in those terms, but hearing it from Diana felt different. It felt real.
Diana had set the table simply, but with care. There were two places set with a few candles flickering between them, casting a warm glow over the room. Kara's heart softened at the sight. It was intimate, peaceful, a welcome break from the stress that had been her life since arriving on Earth.
As they sat down to eat, Diana kept her attention split between Kara and Kal, her eyes bright with affection whenever the baby gurgled or made any noise. It wasn't long before Diana leaned forward slightly, reaching out to gently touch Kal's cheek.
"He's adorable," Diana murmured, her tone filled with genuine affection. "Absolutely the cutest baby I've ever seen."
Kara smiled, her heart swelling with pride. "He is, isn't he? I'm so lucky to have him."
Diana nodded, still smiling. "And he's lucky to have you. He couldn't ask for a better mother."
For a moment, Kara felt a wave of emotion wash over her. She hadn't expected to feel so much—so protective, so devoted, so overwhelmed by the responsibility of raising Kal. But Diana's words soothed her, reminding her that she wasn't alone in this.
The evening unfolded in a way Kara hadn't expected. They spoke about many things—about their lives, their pasts, and what the future might hold. Diana shared stories of her time in Themyscira, her journey to becoming Wonder Woman, and her thoughts on the world outside. Kara, in turn, spoke about Krypton, the memories she held onto, and the sense of loss that still lingered in her heart.
Throughout the evening, Kal remained at the center of their attention. Every time he made a noise or shifted in his sleep, both women's gazes would soften, as if he were the one thread that bound them together.
Kara realized, as the night went on, that Diana wasn't just someone who had entered her life by coincidence. There was something deeper between them—a bond that was growing stronger with each passing moment. She felt it in the way Diana looked at her, in the way she cared for Kal, and in the unspoken understanding they shared.
By the time dinner ended, Kara felt more at ease than she had in a long time. It wasn't just the food or the conversation—it was the sense of connection, of finding someone who understood her in a way few could.
As she prepared to leave, Diana walked her to the door, holding it open for her with that same calm grace she always carried.
"Thank you for tonight," Kara said, adjusting Kal in the carrier. "It was... nice."
Diana smiled. "The pleasure was mine, Kara. I enjoyed every moment. And you're always welcome here, with Kal."
Kara nodded, feeling a warmth spread through her chest. "I'll take you up on that."
With one last glance, Kara stepped out into the cool night air, Kal sleeping soundly against her chest. As she walked back to the farm, her mind was filled with thoughts of the evening—the easy conversation, the way Diana had looked at her, the feeling of being truly understood.
For the first time since arriving on Earth, Kara felt like she was beginning to find her place. And maybe, just maybe, she wasn't alone in it anymore.
