"You always hang out with the princess but, every time, come home empty handed." Sophie's father scolded. "I don't want to be with Mia just to beg for money." Sophie retorted, crossing her arms. "Well, if you want to eat, you will." Her mother replied sharply. "You said she was one of those homosexuals like you, right? Then just date her and take some money. She'll be fine with it if you're dating, won't she?" Sophie's mom suggested to which Sophie let out a frustrated sigh. "I won't play with Mia's feelings just for money or at all for that matter." Sophie responded firmly. "Well then, I hope you're not expecting a meal tonight." Her father retorted. She ignored his retort and went to her room. She collapsed on the bed and let out a long exhausted sigh. Sophie's parents always wanted her to collect money from Mia, but she would never use her friend like that. Even though Sophie needs the money, to her, Mia's happiness is worth so much more.
Sophie has known she was lesbian for a few weeks now, but she hasn't told Mia that. She doesn't want to yet. The next day, Sophie woke up early to slave away to her parents. Most commoners worked as farmers, and her parents preferred Sophie did all the work and they get all the money. They had a small garden that Sophie took care of everyday. She would grow the food, then sell it at the market. It was especially hard to grow food during winter. Sophie gathered some of the good vegetables and fruit, cleaned them and got ready for the market. "I'm heading to the market." She told her parents, walking out the door, holding a box filled with the fruit and vegetables. Her parents ignored her and she sighed and left. Typical she thought. The day went slowly at the market, but that was normal. "Soph?" Mia called, pulling Sophie out of her thoughts. "What are you doing alone in this cold?" Mia questioned. "Being in the cold is better than being at home." Sophie murmured, her head on her arms.
"Well, there's barely anyone out here anyway, so there's basically no point in selling, right?" Mia replied with a raised brow. "I still have to get something otherwise my parents will kill me." Sophie sighed, burring her head in her arms. Mia's eyes softened. She knew Sophie's parents were a pain in the ass and hated that they're making her stand in the freezing cold. Even if they need money, it's wrong to do this to a child. "Hey, why don't we hang out somewhere warmer?" Mia suggests with a soft smile. Sophie looked up at her and then glanced back down. "Thanks, Mia, but I can't." She murmured. "Sophie, I'm not going anywhere till you say yes." Mia said firmly, crossing her arms. Sophie smiled gratefully and sighed. "You just love spoiling me, don't you?" She teased. "Duh, who else is going to do it?" Mia played along. "I'll help you take this stuff back to your place and we'll go to a café or something." Mia said, helping Sophie pack up.
Once they made it back to Sophie's home, Mia had to bite her tongue to prevent herself from bad mouthing Sophie's parents in front of her. "Oh, how lovely it is to get a visit from the princess." Sophie's mother said with a saccharine voice. "I'm sure it is." Mia replied with a forced smile. "You really didn't have to do this." Sophie mumbled. "Trust me, I did." Mia murmured in response. They carried the boxes up to Sophie's room. "You really don't have to do this." Sophie said, putting a box on her bed. "You're right, I don't have to. I want to." Mia replied. "Soph, you're my best friend. If no one will treat you the way you should be treated, I'll do it." She added with a firm gaze. A small smile appeared on Sophie's face along with a light pink colour in her cheeks. "Thanks." She murmured.
After they put the boxes away, they go out into town. "So, where do you want to go?" Mia asked. "Well, you said you'd take me to a café. How about that?" Sophie responded, smiling excitedly. "It's a date." Mia stated. Though she knew Mia was only joking, calling it a date made Sophie blush. She shouldn't feel like this. Mia is in a relationship. Sophie knows they can only be friends. Just friends.
They chatted as they walked to the café, the snow crunching with every step. "Mia?" Sophie called. "Yeah?" Mia replied, glancing at Sophie. "Do you think it's weird that you like girls?" She asked softly. Mia stopped walking and turned to meet Sophie's gaze fully. "No. Why?" She asked with a raised brow. "Well, I dunno. I was just asking, I guess." Sophie shrugged. "Soph, you've known that I'm a lesbian for two years. How does it only matter now?" Mia asked with a fixed gaze. Sophie met Mia's gaze for a moment before her eyes darted away. "I'm sorry if I was offensive. I don't mean it like that." She murmured nervously. "Then what do you mean?" Mia asked. There was an awkward moment of silence between the two of them before Sophie finally spoke. "I'm into girls." She confessed. Mia's eyes widened, not in disgust, but in shock.
After a second, her eyes softened and she stepped closer to Sophie, taking her hand. "Sophie, did you think I would find it weird that you like girls?" She asked with a small smile. "No, I just didn't know how you'd react. When I told my parents, they only saw it as an opportunity to get with you for money because you're lesbian." Sophie explained, her heart beat increasing from the feel of Mia's hands in hers. "Hey, babe." Cleo called. Mia and Sophie turned their heads and saw Cleo walking up to them from down the road. Mia quickly let go of Sophie's hands and turned to Cleo. "Hey." She stammered. Cleo glanced between mia and Sophie before a seductive smile appeared on her lips. She sauntered over to Mia, her hand travelling behind Mia's neck. She positioned her face inches away from Mia's. "I was just thinking about you." She said with a sly smile. Two-faced bitch Sophie thought to herself. Cleo's hand traveled up to cup Mia's breast but Mia pulled away from her grasp.
"Sorry, but I don't think we should do this in public." Mia excused. "I don't think you should do it at all." Sophie chimed in, crossing her arms as she glared at Cleo. Cleo's gaze faltered as she glared back at Sophie, but it quickly fixed. "I didn't know you were her girlfriend now?" She asked assertively. "I'd probably do a better job than you." Sophie retorted. "Okay, enough." Mia said, interrupting their conversation. "Sophie's not my girlfriend. She just... prefers we don't do this in public." Mia explained. Cleo glanced between Mia and Cleo again and forced a smile. "Alright. I believe you." She said with a bitter voice. "But, if you ever try anything..." Cleo let the sentence hang but Mia got the warning. Mia and Sophie walked off, continuing their walk to the café. "You know, you could just break up with her." Sophie told Mia as they walked. Mia sighed, her eyes on the ground. "I don't want to talk about this." She murmured.
