After what felt like hours of backtracking, they finally saw a faint light at the end of a narrow passage.
"Annie, look!" Hitch exclaimed, her voice filed with relief.
"That is daylight," Annie confirmed with a rare smile.
They huried toward the light, crawling as quickely as they could. When they finally emerged into the open air, the sky was beginning to lighten with the first rays of dawn.
Hitch collapsed onto the ground, laughing with relief. "We made it!"
Annie sat beside her, still looking composed but with a small, satisfied smile. She looked out at the sunrise and then turned to Hitch. "I told you we'd make it."
Hitch leaned her head on Annie's shoulder. "You are amazing in there. I don't know what I'd do without you."
Annie shrugged, but her eyes were soft. "You'd find a way. But I'm glad I could be there."
Hitch chuckled. "We should do this again sometime."
Annie rolled her eyes, though she was smiling. "You're crazy."
"Maybe," Hitch said, leaning in for another kiss. "But I'm youre kind of crazy."
Annie didn't argue. She just kissed her back, the warmth of their connection shining brighter than the sunrise before them.
