How you get the girl

Now, every morning, Lisa hoped to run into Noah again. She made an effort to dress a little nicer, still maintaining the elegant style she used for work, and she would arrive at the café much earlier than her office opened, giving her the excuse to sit at a table with her laptop.

But there was no sign of Noah. Days passed, spent searching for him among the faces of passersby, yet she never managed to catch sight of those magnetic eyes.

Doesn't matter, the blouse she had worn that day would still be praised by her older patients, just like every time she dressed a little more stylishly.

Just when she had resigned herself to the idea that she wouldn’t see the musician that day, a familiar voice pulled her from her thoughts.

"Mind if I sit with you?" Noah asked, giving her a shy smile.

The café wasn’t as crowded as the day they had met; several tables were empty, and Lisa pointed that out to him.

"Yeah, but it wouldn’t be the same as having breakfast with a beautiful psychologist" he said.

Lisa smiled and gestured for him to sit in the empty chair in front of her.

"I haven’t seen you around" she said.

"Have you been looking for me?" Noah asked.

Lisa bit her lip as she noticed the satisfied look in Noah’s eyes after the question.

"Is that a crime?"

"Depends. Is it more like stalking, or did you want to ask me out?"

Lisa closed the laptop in front of her and rested her elbow on the table, focusing all her attention on him.

"Definitely stalking."

"Damn, I guess I’ll have to report you then." he said while taking a sip of his coffee "I had some things to do. You know, with the band and all that stuff".

They both smiled like idiots, continuing to make silly jokes, all to avoid admitting that yes, they would love to go out together.

"How did things go with the record label?" Lisa asked, pulling herself together.

Noah seemed surprised that she remembered. "Pretty well. We’re writing our new album, and they wanted to get some clear ideas about the project."

"Last time, I didn’t ask what your role is in the band."

"I’m the producer and singer, but I play several instruments too."

"A man of many talents."

"I can also ask a girl out without knowing anything about her except her name"

"Well, this is pretty surprising"

"Like the place I’d take you for dinner tonight, if you’d agree."

Their eyes were locked. Lisa hadn’t expected such a direct invitation, at least not so soon.

"I have to check my schedule," she said, reopening her laptop. It wasn’t entirely a joke—she did need to check what time she could close the office that day. "My last appointment is at six pm. Can you come by the office around eight?"

Noah was impressed. In front of him was a girl who knew what she wanted and didn’t like wasting time playing games. Yes, he would definitely stop by her office that evening.

They exchanged phone numbers, and Lisa texted him her office address.

"I’ve got to go now, more work meetings," Noah apologized as he stood up from the chair. "I like your blouse, it says  ‘psychologist’." He left a kiss on her cheek and told her he couldn’t wait for that evening.

Shortly after, Lisa closed her laptop and headed to work. She also couldn't wait to that evening to come. She was curious about that boy and she wanted to find out everything about him.

When he heard Holly’s voice answer the phone, Noah didn’t waste a second, skipping all the pleasantries the mother of his girlfriend would have appreciated.

"Sorry to bother you, Holly, it’s Noah. Can you ask Lisa to answer her phone, please?"

"Noah, what are you talking about? Lisa’s not here."

It couldn’t be. She had to be lying; there was no other explanation. He placed a hand on his face, this situation was giving him so much distress.

"Holly, please. I saw that Lisa was looking at train tickets to come to see you on her computer, and I can’t find her anywhere. I know she’s upset with me, I just... I just want to know if she’s okay."

But what he got in response left him even more stunned and shaken than before. "Noah, I don’t know what happened between you two, but Lisa isn’t here. Until now, I thought she was at work."

"Well, she's not and I'm starting to feel worried about it"

Things were getting stranger by every minute. Holly went on to explain that she had tried calling Lisa earlier that morning but had received no answer. Her mother’s heart was beginning to worry, and so was Noah’s.

"I will find her, Holly, I promise"

He glanced with tired eyes at the computer screen. Inside it were all of her patients’ documents; Lisa would never have left it unattended. That meant she couldn’t have gone far. She wanted to come home.

Noah rolled up his sleeves, preparing to dive deep into the hidden corners of his girlfriend’s computer, with one question echoing in his mind:

"Where are you, Lisa?"
