It had been a couple of days since the intense argument. Lisa had tried calling Noah throughout the day and the following day as well, but he hadn’t answered. Life resumed its normal course.
Lisa went to work, had lunch with Nancy, and baked cookies for John, the elderly neighbor.
That evening, she opened the door to a distressed Nicholas. He confessed he couldn’t keep up with the pace of his life anymore, that he no longer wanted it.
Then something irreversible happened. They kissed, and it would have been better if they had stopped there. Lisa found herself yearning for his touch, his blue eyes that seemed to read her soul, as if she had always been an open book to him. She whispered for him to stay. She couldn’t bear the thought of losing Nicholas from her life too.
He embraced her, their warmth was intoxicating. Every kiss on her skin felt like a burning scar.
He guided her to the bedroom and Lisa made he sit on the bed.
Now she was on top of him, kissing every flap of his skin.
That nightgown was covering nothing, but Nicholas thought she was so sexy in it. One of the straps fell on her shoulder and he wasted no time in kissing her on that spot.
Nicholas wasn't thinking about the consequences when she took his shirt off. Neither when they were finally naked.
Now he was the one in control. Nicholas wanted to be with her in this situation for so long that he couldn't believe it when she moaned his name.
She wasn't thinking about Noah, Lisa was thinking about him. This meant that she wanted the same thing. Maybe from that night in the hotel, just like him.
Everything was perfect. Their sighs were synchronized. The rhythm of their bodies was like a song that nobody wrote already.
There was no tomorrow when they let the pleasure come like blood flowing through their veins.
There was no tomorrow when Lisa asked him to stay.
But tomorrow came.
The next morning, the room that had witnessed their moment of weakness was now filled with their embarrassed glances.
They woke up at the same time. He wanted to tell her everything. That he loved her. But then he saw guilt in Lisa's eyes.
"You regret everything, right?"
Lisa looked away, incapable of seeing the pain in his face.
"You don't feel anything for me, do you?"
Lisa turned to look at him, and from her gaze, Nicholas understood everything. Noah had told him they had broken up, that they had become incompatible. His friend didn’t even answer her calls anymore because he didn’t want to have anything to do with her.
Nicholas felt foolish; he had believed she felt something for him too. That she had broken up with Noah because of him.
"Why did you sleep with me?" he asked, swallowing a lump in his throat as he wished he could swallow his humiliation so she wouldn’t hear it in his voice. "You used me, didn’t you? I’m just a game to you, I was just a way for you to forget about him."
Lisa looked away again, and that made him even angrier. "Lisa, look at me, for fuck’s sake!"
And Lisa did. The most beautiful brown eyes he had ever seen were now covered in a sheen of tears.
“I’m sorry,” the girl tried to take his hand, and in that moment, Nicholas became fully aware of the situation.
He was naked in the bed of his best friend’s girlfriend, who was also the girl he had fallen in love with.
