Birds were chirping outside. It was a chilly yet cold morning. Ronald was deep in sleep when his mom knocked on his door, quietly calling his name, "Ronald, Ronald, are you up?" Candice asked from behind the door. She didn’t get any response. She gently opened the door, avoiding making noise so as not to wake her son. She grabbed some clothes off the floor and quietly shut the door.
Candice went on to put the clothes in the washing machine. She did some cleaning around the house and set the table for breakfast with her son.
Ronald slightly opened his eyes, looking at the window. He saw some birds flying by and noticed that the scarf was missing from his room. Rushing to the washing machine, he quickly opened it to find the scarf inside. He asked his mom, with a disappointed look on his face, "Why did you put the scarf in the washing machine?"
Candice replied, "Why? Isn’t it yours?"
Ronald: "No, Mom, it’s not mine. It’s from a girl downtown. She gave it to me the other day."
Candice: "Why would a girl randomly give you her scarf?"
Ronald: "Because she had to."
Candice: "Okay, I’m confused. Is this what you teens are doing these days? Exchanging clothes as a sign of love?"
Ronald: "Love? Who said anything about love?"
Candice: "Come on, take a seat at the table. Let’s have a talk."
She pulled a chair and sat down, asking her son a couple of questions about the scarf.
Candice: "Okay, tell me about this girl. What’s her name, and how do you two know each other?"
Ronald: "Mom, do we really have to do this?"
Candice: "Umm, yeah. I think I deserve to know if my son has a girlfriend."
Ronald: "Her name is Jenny. She’s not really my girlfriend, but I do like her. A lot."
Candice: "Oh really? And does she know that you like her, or love her?"
Ronald: "Well, I hope so."
Candice: "Then how will you know if she feels the same way?"
Ronald: "I’ll keep chasing her until time catches us together, because I know someday she’ll love me."
Candice: "Love? What do you know about love?"
Ronald: "Well, if you must know, Mom," he smiled, "I may not know a lot about love, but I feel it in my chest when I’m with her."
Candice: "Then tell her how you feel."
Ronald: "You think I should?"
Candice: "I think you know you should."
Ronald: "Okay, Mom. I’ll take your word for it."
Candice: "Now go and take a shower and brush your teeth."
Ronald got up and went to do as his mom said. As he took the scarf out of the washing machine, he lifted it to his face to see if the scent was still lingering on it, and just as he thought, it was. He held onto it for a moment before dropping it in his room and heading to take a shower.
Meanwhile, Jenny was preparing breakfast for her father when she realized she had dreamed about Ronald, which was strange to her. To her knowledge, she had never dreamed about a guy before, let alone someone she had just met and was still just an acquaintance with. As she poured tea into her cup, it spilled over and burned her fingers. She cursed, "Oh my fucking God!" Her dad heard her and shouted from the other room, "Hey, language please!" She replied with a chuckle, "Morning, Dad. Sorry."
