The night air was thick with the scent of moss and rain, the dense woods swallowing every sound but the rapid beat of her heart. Love ran, her breath ragged, feet pounding the earth as though the shadows themselves chased her. In a way, they were. Something dark loomed behind her, something she couldn't outrun. She had been running for days—her legs burning, her body aching—but she couldn't stop. Not now.
She couldn't remember when the danger first found her, only that it had taken everything from her—her family, her home, her sense of safety. Now, all she had was the wild pulse of survival thundering through her veins. The moonlight barely cut through the canopy above, and the forest seemed endless, offering no respite or refuge.
But then, she felt it: a shift in the air. The hairs on the back of her neck rose as the forest itself seemed to hold its breath. And before she could make sense of the change, something darted out from the trees, swift and silent. Love barely had time to register the shadowy figure before a force knocked her off her feet.
Hands grabbed her, not rough but firm, and a voice, smooth and unfeeling, whispered in her ear, "Be still."
Panic flared, but exhaustion held her captive. She had no more strength to fight, no more will to keep running. She was pulled up from the ground, and through the haze of fear and fatigue, she saw them: cloaked figures with eyes that gleamed like starlight, moving as though they were one with the darkness. The Court of Shadows.
The stories she had heard of them—whispers of fae spies, unseen assassins, and creatures who thrived in the dark—rushed to her mind, but there was no fear now, only a strange kind of surrender.
"Who are you running from?" one of them asked, their voice sharp as a blade.
Love shook her head, the words caught in her throat. She had no answers, only more questions. But it didn't seem to matter. They exchanged glances, then one of them, a girl with sharp eyes and a smile too wicked for comfort, stepped forward.
"I'm Fuchsia," she said, her grin softening into something almost friendly. "And you're lucky we found you before someone else did."
From that moment, Love's fate was no longer her own. The Court of Shadows took her in, their world of secrets and danger becoming hers. They taught her how to move in silence, to read the lies behind every smile, to thrive in a place where trust was as rare as sunlight.
And through it all, Fuchsia was there—her closest ally, her only friend in this world of spies and shadows. Together, they learned, trained, and rose within the ranks of the Court. But no matter how deep Love was pulled into the darkness, the thing she had been running from still lurked, waiting for the moment it would catch up to her.
And when it did, Love knew the Court of Shadows would be the only thing standing between her and the abyss.
Note!
Not gonna lie guys I used ChatGPT because I could not think of a good prologue. I wrote one then scrapped it because it wasn't that good. The rest of the writing will be a 100% me so just be prepared for the writing to not be the best.
