. . .
"This is the Cave of Souls?"
Luis's question echoes throughout the dark, murky walls of the cave. Carmen follows behind you and Manolo, still holding her father's decapitated head. You shudder in disgust at the warm humidity that lingers throughout the area, stepping carefully so that you wouldn't slip and fall. It seems like you aren't the only one feeling weary about the cave. It's too dark to see anything in front of you.
"Si, this just feels like a regular cave." You sigh, kicking a stray rock out of the way.
"Stay close to me." Manolo mutters, trying to sound brave. You playfully roll your eyes.
Manolo leads the way, squinting through the dark fog.
"Shh, Grandpa, show some respect." Manolo says, unsheathing both of his swords from his back.
You peer carefully at the sharp, jagged rocks that seem to grow from the ground. You keep close to Carmen and Luis as you walk, afraid that something would come out from within the shadows. The sudden sound of moving makes you flinch in your place, until you see a strange golden light emerge from the dense fog. You watch in genuine confusion as the golden light quickly slithers along the floor of the cave, illuminating the cave with warm light.
"That was... awesome man!"
Manolo almost backs into you in shock, when a tall, waxy deity falls into view.
"Look, the giant boulders were like, 'boom, boom, boom, boom'!"
Your mouth hangs open, like the rest of your group, as you watch the bearded man act out a scene in intense passion. You rub your eyes a few times when a floating, glowing book flutters next to him.
"And then, you were like, 'shhhp, shoop, shhsp, shoop'! And then the cave guardian, he was like, 'I'm 'gon judge you with this giant sword'!"
Manolo slowly puts his swords away, peering more confused than ever.
"Um, excuse me, sir?" You ask hesitantly, raising your hand slightly.
"And then, you- you, you got through!"
"We need to find La Muerte." You explain. Manolo nods and wraps an arm around your shoulders.
"La Muerte?" The man asks, in which the floating book flips open to a certain page. His expression falters.
"Sorry, you missed her, (Name)." He sighs.
"Huh? You know me?" You ask confusedly.
The book shuts closed, the man's smile returning with a wave of his finger. "Yeah, mang! We know everybody."
"We know Luis, Carmen, and Puddle." He states, before pointing down to a damp spot on the cave floor. You blink.
"How are you doing, Puddle?"
You fight every urge in your body to laugh, grasping Manolo's arm with an iron grip. Manolo's confusion just doubles, peering at you with a confused grin.
"It's all here, in the Book of Life."
The book gives a tiny bow.
"Wait, where are my manners? C'mon in, y'all!"
You gasp when the ground starts to violently rumble underneath you, the lower layer of fog dissipating from the movement. The god raises his hands into the air, in which the platform beneath your feet starts to ascend. At first, you see nothing, with the sheer amount of fog in the area. You and Manolo could only feel yourselves rising, the wind tousling your hair as you struggle to look through the thick mist.
