Jay:

I was so bored yesterday while I was waiting for Nya to finish up the driving exam.

It didn't feel like an eternity when I had to take it. It had only felt like a century.

But now the two of us were inside BorgBucks, in line to order.

"So, uh, what are you getting?" I asked her.

Since she seems to actually drink this stuff, I'll just order the same thing and hope I like it.

"Dark coffee. What about you?"

"I don't know. Dark coffee, probably." I'm trying to sound like I drink this stuff, but seriously, what is dark coffee? It sounds so evil.

She raises her brow at me. "Really? I didn't think you'd like it."

"Look, it's time to order."

I was hoping the people in front of us would magically disappear by the time she turned to look, but no luck.

She raised her eyebrow at me, and I chuckled nervously.

She turned back around to face the cashier when the people that were in front of us were gone, and she told the guy at the counter our orders.

After waiting for a few minutes, we grab our coffees and take a seat in a booth.

"So," I pause to take a sip of my coffee, only to barely choke it down. "How do you drink this stuff?" I point at her while she's taking a big swig of her drink, with a bitter expression on my face.

She just shrugs. "I knew you wouldn't like it. Why didn't you order something else?"

"I've never had coffee before," I answered truthfully.

"And you thought the most bitter coffee I've ever had was the way to go?" She shakes her head with a smile on her face. "Sometimes I can't figure out if you're the smartest or the stupidest person I've met. Maybe both."

"Or maybe neither." I add. I may be good at inventing, but truth be told, I'm a mess at everything else.

And I'd rather be neutral than be an idiot.

"It doesn't matter, though, because I like you best when you're you." She smiles at me, a light blush creeping upon her cheeks.

Something inside me is buzzing, trying to come out. She likes me... for me.

Not for my parent's junkyard, crazy as that sounds.

Not for an added comedy bonus.

Not as a way to piss her brother off.

Me.

For a second, I feel like I've been charged with lightning, a huge feeling of euphoria and power, and something else I can't figure out.

I also feel like my chances of success when asking her out tonight have just been boosted.

Then that feeling disappeared just as quickly as it came.

Nya looks at me as if I'm a calculus question that she's trying to figure out. "What was that?" She says quietly.

"What do you mean?" I notice some of the patrons also staring at me.

"Come on," she grabs her coffee in one hand and cautiously grabs mine in her other.

"Where are we going?" I ask her.

"I don't think there'll be anybody by the beach," Yes! The plan was in motion. "Also, what the hell just happened to you?" She looks into my eyes, searching for answers.
