Chapter 16: Unveiling the Truth
YN sat alone in her apartment, the soft hum of her air conditioner the only sound breaking the oppressive silence. The light of her desk lamp cast a dim glow across the room, illuminating the evidence that had shattered her world.
She had found it by accident. The document, a glossy wedding photo in a frame, was tucked behind some papers in a file Namjoon had left at her desk. The photograph was of Namjoon in a crisp black suit, standing beside a woman in a flowing white dress. Their smiles were wide, genuine, and full of the kind of happiness YN had once believed was meant for them.
Her hands trembled as she picked up the frame, her mind struggling to piece together the reality she was now forced to confront. The room seemed to close in around her, the walls pressing down as if to contain the overwhelming surge of emotions crashing through her.
The phone buzzed on the table, but YN ignored it. She could hardly focus on anything but the image before her. She tried to recall the moments of intimacy she and Namjoon had shared, the passionate encounters and whispered promises. Every touch, every kiss now felt tainted by the revelation. The joy and passion had been real, but the weight of betrayal was unbearable.
Memories of their last heated argument flooded back. The raw emotions, the passionate reconciliation, it all seemed like a cruel joke now. Her mind raced as she replayed every interaction with Namjoon, every moment of intimacy, trying to reconcile them with the reality of his marital status.
Her phone buzzed again, and this time she glanced at the screen. A message from Namjoon: “Hey, can we talk? I’ve been thinking about us and need to explain some things.”
The message felt like a knife twisting in her gut. The reality of Namjoon’s marriage was undeniable, and his message seemed to mock her pain. She needed answers, but more than that, she needed to make sense of the emotions consuming her.
YN’s thoughts spiralled as she paced the room, her heart aching with a mix of anger and sorrow. The love she had felt seemed tainted by deceit, the passion now a reminder of how little she had truly known about the man she thought she was falling for.
The soft glow of the lamp and the quiet of the room were stark contrasts to the storm raging inside her. She sank into her chair, the photograph still clutched in her hand, her mind overwhelmed by the gravity of her discovery.
Finally, she picked up her phone and dialled Namjoon’s number, her hands shaking slightly. The call connected, and she could hear his voice, calm and soothing, as he answered.
“YN? What’s up? I’ve been wanting to talk to you,” Namjoon said, his voice betraying none of the tension she was feeling.
“Namjoon,” she said, her voice trembling with emotion. “I found something today. I need to know why you’ve been lying to me.”
There was a pause on the other end, and YN could almost hear Namjoon’s breath catch. “What did you find?” he asked cautiously.
“A photograph,” she said, her voice breaking. “A wedding photo of you with another woman. It’s clear you’re married, Namjoon. How could you keep this from me?”
Namjoon’s silence was deafening, and YN could hear the shuffling of papers as he moved on his end. “YN, I wanted to tell you. I was going to. It’s just... complicated.”
“Complicated?” YN’s voice rose, frustration mingling with pain. “You’re married, Namjoon! How could you think it’s just ‘complicated’? You’ve been lying to me, leading me on.”
“I never meant to hurt you,” Namjoon said, his voice thick with regret. “I’ve been trying to figure out how to explain. My marriage… it’s not what it seems. We’re separated, but legally, I’m still married.”
“So you’re telling me that you’re still with her, even if you’re separated?” YN asked, her voice wavering. “How long were you planning on keeping this from me?”
“YN, please,” Namjoon pleaded. “I didn’t want to involve you in the mess of my personal life. I care about you, and I thought... I thought we could find a way to be together despite everything.”
The anguish in his voice was evident, but YN’s heart was heavy with the weight of betrayal. “I don’t know if I can trust you anymore,” she said, her voice barely above a whisper. “I need time to process this.”
“I understand,” Namjoon replied softly. “I’m sorry for everything. I’ll give you the space you need.”
The call ended, leaving YN alone with her thoughts and the photograph that now symbolised her shattered trust. The love she had felt seemed to crumble under the weight of the truth. The passionate encounters, the tender moments, now seemed like a distant memory, tainted by the deception she had uncovered.
As she stared at the photograph, the image of Namjoon and his wife a stark reminder of the reality she had been blind to, YN felt a profound sense of loss. The affair that had once been a thrilling escape from her everyday life had become a painful reminder of the secrets and lies she had been forced to confront.
With a heavy heart, YN put the photograph down and turned away, the sense of betrayal and sadness settling over her like a dark cloud. She knew she needed to come to terms with the reality of her situation and decide how to move forward, but for now, all she could do was let the pain wash over her and hope for some clarity in the days to come.
