The one thing Robert probably liked most about LA and its climate was the fact that the nights were warm. Of course this was still LA so there was not really the option of watching the stars but the atmosphere was still nice.

At least at Carlos' house.

The air was fresher than in the middle of the city. It was quieter, too. In Robert's apartment you could hear the noise from the cars and even though his curtains were supposed to be opaque, he could still see the headlights of the cars.

Most of the time, he didn't care. He rarely slept anyway. And if he did, his exhaustion knocked him out entirely so he didn't see it anymore. It barely bothered him. But when he was sitting in Carlos' garden it felt so much more comfortable. There was no noise, no car lights. If you sat outside for long enough it could actually get so dark that you could barely see anything.

It was one of those nights. They weren't working a big case, just some smaller, easy homicide cases. For once, they had a night off. It was comfortable. A silence had settled between them that did not make Robert want to crawl out of his skin like silence usually did.

If he really listened, he could hear the ruffle of Carlos' clothes with every breath he took. He felt comfortable enough for his eyelids to actually get heavy and start falling shut.

Anna wasn't home. Robert had asked about her but he had already forgotten where she was. Whatever Carlos had said had sounded like a lie, anyways. But it was a casual lie. Nothing Robert felt concerned about. More like She's having a girls trip with her friends, getting black out drunk in bars and watching strippers, but if would tell you that, you'd judge my marriage so I'm telling you she's visiting family.

Robert slowly released a deep breath he'd been holding for a few seconds now. He leaned his head back in the chair, allowing his body to slump a little further into the comfortably cushion.

"So..." Carlos finally said, his voice calm. "You ever had gay porn as evidence in a case?"

Robert snorted loudly, his laugh cutting through the night, seeming so out of place. He turned his head to face Carlos, not able to stop the grin forming on his lips as he saw the amused expression on his face. "No, as a matter of fact, I never had any gay porn as evidence in any of my cases. That was a first for me too."

"Devil slash angel role play gay porn is definitely not something I'd ever come across at work." Carlos chuckled, recalling the video they had had to watch that morning at work.

"Why do you sound so disgusted?" Robert responded, a quiet laugh escaping under his breath.

"Oh, I'm not disgusted. It's just not the kind of gay porn I'm into. Why? Your preference?"

Robert raised his eyebrow. For a moment a silence settled between them again. But it wasn't their usual silence. Not the comfortable one Robert had gotten used to. It was the one that made him itch to jump up and move around. Take a swig of whiskey.

It was the kind that forced Robert to watch how Carlos' smiled dropped more and more with every second till he finally turned his head away completely, staring straight ahead.

He just knew Carlos was about to apologize and he hated the thought of that. Carlos was supposed to speak freely around him. Not worry about things he said. Even if they weren't appropriate for the work space. Even though they of course weren't in their work space in that particular moment.

"I don't... watch gay porn." Robert finally said, just saying the first thing that came to his mind, just to shut Carlos up before he could apologize.
