"Do you want to meet up tonight?" Robert asked, brushing his hand through Carlos' thick hair.

The traffic wasn't moving and it didn't look like it was going to any time soon. They were stuck on the highway on their way back into the city but apparently there had been a accident on the road and now they were stuck.

"I can't do tonight." Carlos responded, turning his head to look out of the window.

"Carlos, what's up with you?" "It's nothing." Carlos sighed, scratching his neck.

"Carlos, I'm gonna drag you out of that car and take a hike with you in the desert right now and only give you water when you tell me what's up. Or you just tell me here in the cozy car with the AC on."

"My dad's in town. We're having dinner with him tonight so I can't do tonight." Carlos responded, forcing himself to smile. But Robert didn't need his psychology degree to know that there was more behind this.

"Aren't you happy to see him? You always seemed to be really proud of your dad." "I am. He is a great cop." Carlos responded. There was something he wasn't saying and it was so painfully obvious.

"You don't seem excited." Robert said, finally putting his hand on Carlos' thigh, squeezing lightly to assure him that he was there.

He had never been great with dealing with emotions but he wanted Carlos to feel safe and listened to.

"I'm not excited. I love my dad. But every time I see him it's like it was all in my head. Like everything I remember about him is from when I was 10 and my dad was still my biggest hero. He's a good cop, not a good dad. All he cares about is his job. And it's like I don't do good enough in my job even though it's all he ever wanted me to do." Carlos sighed.

He unbuckled his seat belt and leaned forward, pushing his elbows onto his knees and burying his face in his hands.

"I'm free tonight. I can come over and be the puffer. I'm a genius so he will probably like me. And besides, as your boyfriend I should probably meet your father sooner or-"

"Robert, he doesn't know. He doesn't you're more than my co-worker. He doesn't know we're a couple or even close friends for that matter." "What?" Robert asked. It wasn't like he was mad. But it confused him because the only place they weren't out was work. And Captain Blake still knew about them because she had met them at a gay bar once and they admitted to being in a relationship.

And because they still did their duties and besides some soft touches in the car their relationship did not affect their work. So Captain Blake hadn't done anything about it.

But it was still weird to hear Carlos say that he hadn't told someone about their relationship. He was usually extremely and happily open about it.

"He doesn't know I'm omnisexual. Or polyamorous." "You never told him?" Robert asked carefully, turning more towards his partner. He didn't give a shit about the traffic anymore and they wouldn't move any time soon either, so it wasn't like it really mattered.

"No. Well... I did, kind of. I came out to him as bisexual when I was 16. And he screamed at me. For hours. So every time he asked about my love life after that guy names became girl names and he became she and sharing my boyfriend's clothes became not having any hoodies in my closet because my girlfriend stole all of them. I didn't do it often because then I met Anna and I didn't have to lie anymore but... I never bothered to tell him that he was right and I actually wasn't bisexual but instead omnisexual because it would have just made everything worse."

"And you ended up having a wife so there was no point in starting a fight with him." Robert mumbled, barely realizing how accusing and passive aggressive he sounded.

"I didn't choose to fall in love Anna, Robert. I didn't choose any of this shit. I didn't choose being queer, I didn't choose to fall in love with you. And trust me, I didn't want it. I was begging God to just make me straight and make it not matter. Make me normal."

"Carlos, stop." Robert said. He wanted to hug the other man but Carlos was pressing himself to the door of the car like a scared animal. Trying to reach for him would probably make it worse.

"I don't care that he doesn't know we are dating. I just get why you never really made drama about it again. It's okay. I would have done the same." Robert calmly said.

Carlos sighed, rubbing his face with his hands again.

"Anna is pissed too." he finally mumbled.

"Let me guess. Your father is a The woman belongs in the kitchen kinda guy?" Robert asked. Carlos sighed again, nodding in defeat. He looked so exhausted that a month-long serial killer case with no leads was nothing against his current state.

"Let me come over tonight." Robert said, turning his hand so his palm was facing upwards. Carlos got the hint and took his hand, squeezing it like it was the only thing keeping him from insanity.

"Let me come over tonight and keep your dad busy. I will be your perfect, genius police partner. He won't know we're dating. He won't know how close we actually are. I will just make him think that I heard so much about this great cop and had to meet him myself."

"Don't do that to yourself." Carlos sighed, finally letting his head drop in Robert's direction. Robert smiled softly, pressing his forehead against Carlos' to make him feel a little safer. "I'm not doing anything to me. I'm just being there for my boyfriend. And if that means, I can't be officially your boyfriend, I'm okay with that."

Carlos smiled. He angled his head a little differently, putting it onto Robert's shoulder.

"Is he staying in a hotel?" "Yeah, why?" "If he likes me, I will offer to bring him home. And on my way home, I'll come check on you." "You can't stay over, my dad has a habit of showing up before breakfast just to-"

"Carlos, if all the time we have is just enough for one hug, I will still come by." "So that's why you got laid so much before we met." Carlos chuckled.

"That's it. You're walking home, get out."

Carlos grinned, cupping Robert's cheek and pulling him in. He pressed his lips to Robert's, kissing him urgently. "Still want me to get out of the car?" he grinned when he pulled back, feeling Robert follow him with his lips.

"Nah, I think you're fine. For now." Robert mumbled, grabbing Carlos' face and pulling him in again.
