The Past
It was a day heavy with memories for Jay and Will Halstead. Today marked the 30th anniversary of their escape from their abusive father after their mother’s death. The haunted past had followed them like a shadow, but now, they had built a life together in Chicago. Jay was a dedicated detective in the Intelligence Unit, while Will thrived as an attending physician in the Emergency Department at Chicago Med. Despite the scars of their childhood, they had each other—a bond forged in fire.
A Quiet Evening
As the day wound down, Jay was eager to return home. "You ready to watch the Blackhawks?" he asked Will, who was busy wrapping up his shift.
"More than ready. Just let me finish this last patient," Will replied, glancing at the clock. "We deserve a break."
Little did they know, the ghosts of their past were about to resurface.
The Break-In
As they settled into their living room, the familiar sounds of the game filled the air. Suddenly, the atmosphere shifted. The door burst open, and their father stormed in, eyes wild with rage.
"Look who thinks they can run away!" he yelled, his voice dripping with venom. "You think I wouldn’t find you, you little brats?"
The Assault
Jay instinctively stepped in front of Will. "Get out of here!" he shouted, but it was too late. Their father lunged at them, fists flying.
"You're worthless! I should’ve done this years ago!" he screamed, landing a punch that sent Jay crashing to the floor.
Will’s heart raced as he tried to pull his brother out of harm's way. "Stop! Please!" he begged, but the man was relentless.
The Call for Help
Meanwhile, at the Intelligence Unit, the atmosphere shifted from casual camaraderie to concern. Platt and Voight noted Jay’s absence.
"Where’s Halstead?" Platt asked, glancing at the clock.
"He should’ve been here by now," Voight replied, furrowing his brow. "I’ll give him a call."
Just as Voight dialed, he heard the line connect. "Jay? You there?"
“Help!” Jay’s voice came through, barely above a whisper, before a blood-curdling scream echoed over the line.
“What the hell was that?!” Platt exclaimed, her heart racing.
“Get the team!” Voight barked, already moving towards the door.
The Search
The team gathered quickly, urgency palpable in the air. Mouse looked particularly anxious. "What if something happened to him? He wouldn’t just not show up."
“Let’s split up and search the area,” Voight directed, determination in his voice. “We find him, we bring him home.”
The Discovery
After what felt like hours, they traced Jay’s last known location to his apartment. They burst through the door to find a scene that would haunt them forever.
Jay lay crumpled on the floor, bloodied and unconscious, while their father stood over him, shouting insults. Will was in the corner, trying to shield himself.
“Get away from him!” Voight shouted, rushing forward, while Platt called for backup.
Confrontation
“Thought you could run away from me, you idiot! I wish you were dead!” their father screamed, raising his fist.
In that moment, Jay, barely conscious, managed a weak wink at Will before slipping into unconsciousness.
Voight and Platt charged, tackling their father to the ground. “You’re not going to hurt them anymore!” Voight roared, handcuffing him.
Aftermath
As the paramedics arrived, Platt knelt beside Jay, panic in her voice. “Stay with us, Jay! Help is here!”
Mouse hovered nearby, eyes wide. “Is he going to be okay?”
“Will, get over here!” Platt yelled, and Will rushed to his brother’s side, tears streaming down his face.
“Jay, please wake up…” he whispered, brushing the hair from Jay’s forehead.
The Hospital
Days turned into a blur as Jay was rushed to the hospital, placed in a coma due to the severe injuries.
Will paced the waiting room, anxiety etched on his face. “Will he wake up?” he asked, voice cracking.
The doctor looked somber. “We’ll have to wait and see. He’s a fighter, but it’s too soon to tell.”
A Father’s Fate
Their father was arrested, facing charges that could keep him locked away for a very long time. Platt and Voight knew they had to protect Jay and Will, ensuring they would never have to face him again.
A Ray of Hope
Weeks passed, and one quiet morning, as Will sat by Jay’s bedside, he felt a squeeze on his hand. “Jay?” he gasped, hope igniting in his chest.
“Will…” Jay muttered, eyes fluttering open. “I… I’m here.”
“Thank God! You’re going to be okay!” Will exclaimed, tears of relief streaming down his face.
The Future
As Jay continued to heal, the bond between the brothers deepened. They had survived their past and were ready to face the future together, free from the chains that once bound them.
“Together, right?” Jay asked one day, a faint smile on his lips.
“Always,” Will replied, knowing that they had finally escaped their nightmare.
